Trio of Panthers in All-Star games

Heny to serve as assistant coach

Powell High School will be well represented at each of the Wyoming Coaches Foundation All-Star games in Casper on Saturday, with three recent graduates and one coach participating in the North vs. South All-Star games.

Featured in the opening volleyball match at 1 p.m. will be PHS grad Addy Thorington, who’s a part of the North’s roster.

Thorington finished her prep career with more than 1,300 kills for the Panthers. She was named All-State three years in a row, and part of the team that advanced to the Class 3A state championship game last fall.

Thorington will be one of nine 3A players featured in the contest.

The girls’ basketball game follows at 3 p.m. and will feature Waycee Harvey for the North girls.

Harvey was named All-Conference last season after averaging 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists for the Panthers. She will be one of five 3A players in the contest.

The boys’ basketball game will cap off the evening at 5 p.m., and will feature both Gunnar Erickson playing and PHS boys’ head basketball coach Mike Heny as an assistant coach.

Erickson was an All-State honoree for the Panthers last season. He finished his Powell career with 1,021 points — averaging 14.2 points per game in his senior campaign — and knocked down the fourth-most 3-pointers in school history with 107.

Erickson is one of six 3A players in the contest, playing for Heny one last time.

The coach helped lead the Panthers to their first state title in 26 years this past season. The squad finished 26-0 and set a number of school records for wins along the way.

Heny will serve as the assistant coach alongside the 1A state champion coaching staff from Upton. Under head coach Joe Samuelson and assistant Nick Johnson, the Upton Bobcats went 26-1 and won the 1A state title for the third time in four years.

While Saturday’s contests will cap Thorington’s, Harvey’s and Erickson’s prep careers, the games won’t be the athletes’ final competitions.

Thorington signed to play volleyball at the University of Wyoming this fall, Harvey signed to compete in track and field at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado, and Erickson signed to play basketball at Northwest College.
