The Powell Pioneers head into the postseason this weekend, traveling to Green River for the Class ‘A’ West District Tournament that begins Friday and ends Sunday.
Powell (39-18 overall, 8-4 in ‘A’ Northwest) holds the No. 2 seed out of the Northwest. In the first round of the tournament, at 1 p.m. Friday, the Pioneers will square off with the Rawlins Bandits (4-23 overall, 3-9 ‘A’ Southwest).
Rawlins, which is the No. 3 seed from the Southwest, enters into the tournament having lost four straight and eight of their last 10. The Pioneers, meanwhile, have won three of their last four and six of their last 10.
If Powell wins, it will advance to a Saturday night contest at 7 p.m. against either Northwest No. 3 seed Lovell (19-22-2 overall, 7-5 ‘A’ Northwest) or Southwest No. 2 seed Green River (19-17-2 overall, 9-3 ‘A’ Southwest).
If Powell loses, it will face the loser of that contest at 1 p.m. Saturday.
If Powell advances to the championship game, it will be at 7 p.m. Sunday while the third place game will be at 4 p.m.
The tourney features a double elimination bracket, in which teams generally will need to win two games to advance to the state tournament, with three places up for grabs.
The Pioneers will be looking to defend their district crown from last year. However, they head into the tournament with little pressure: As the hosts of next week’s state tourney, the Pioneers will automatically be included in the eight-team field. The state competition kicks off on Saturday, July 27 at Powell’s Ed Lynn Memorial Field.
