Who cares about the Powell Senior Center?

Dear editor:

In the Nov. 4 issue of the Tribune there is a letter written by Marynell Oechsner that addresses both the new library building and the work towards a new senior center. It was a great letter, addressing the complications of the new library and getting the money for a new senior center.

The senior center has a board of directors with a building committee that is a subset of the board. They have approached government agencies and some of the local philanthropic groups but that is it. They have a grant writer. What they don’t have is a board that is willing to get out into the public, at the fair, at the Stampede or other large events. In other words, the present senior center is virtually invisible to the public. Newspaper articles and letters to the editor only reach a limited number of people. Note to the board: If you don’t let the general populace of Park County know the center needs help, who do you expect to do it? If not you, then who?

The senior center board is asking for a 1% raise in sales taxes next year. They need to get out there and prove to the community that the additional cost will be beneficial for all those present seniors and the upcoming ones too.

The board has squandered many opportunities to reach out to the public letting them know the plight of the senior center. There is no transparency, no open houses and no fundraisers. How much does anyone know about the present senior center or the one that needs to be built? Does the senior community really want a new senior center? We were once told by a board member that the seniors don’t care that the present center is not ADA compliant. They don’t complain so it’s not important. Is that true?

Marynell, our advice to you would be to go to a senior center board meeting and ask what you can do to help. They meet the last Tuesday of every month, at 10 a.m., upstairs at the senior center. Call in advance to be sure the date has not changed because of the holidays. Their number is 307-754-4223. Anyone who is interested in helping can attend and ask questions. Even if you are only interested in what is going on you may attend. They are open to the public but that is not publicized.

Sincerely,

Linda and Bob Graff
