Four double digit wins led to a convincing title for the Powell Panther girls’ basketball team, defeating Wyoming Indian 68-37, Riverside 75-28, the Cody junior varsity 49-20 and Lovell 50-36 to win the Big Horn Basin Classic over the weekend in Thermopolis and Worland.

Opening up the tournament in Thermopolis the Panthers (8-3) took on the 2A Chiefs (10-4 overall, 1-0 2A Southwest).
Powell came out of the gates strong, forcing turnovers and converting those turnovers into easy points as the Panthers quickly built a 15-0 lead before Wyoming Indian scored midway through the first.
The teams matched scoring the rest of the quarter, as the Panthers led 22-7 after the first.
Early in the second quarter the Panthers quickly pushed the lead over 20, and a Coy Erickson 3-pointer made it a 37-17 game with 3:30 left in the half.
Continuing the first half scoring outburst, Ivy Agee made it a 30 point game with 2:25 remaining and the Panthers led 45-15 at the break.
“That first half is probably the best first half of basketball that we’ve played,” coach Chelsea Kistler said. “I’ve always known we’ve had it in us, but they just played very unselfishly. They shared the ball really well.”
The Panthers cruised in the second half, maintaining the more than 30 point lead, up 58-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
Powell got plenty of action for every player in the 68-37 win.
Agee led with 17 points, while Alexa Richardson had 14 and Saige Kidd and Catelynn Floy each had 10.
Leah Graham led the Panthers with nine rebounds, while Agee tied for the team lead in assists with five alongside Emery Hernandez.
“Leah, you don’t really see her name a lot in the stat lines, but boy she really crashes the boards for us and gets us extra possessions offensively and really does a great job,” Kistler said.
Agee also led the Panthers with five steals.
POWELL 75, RIVERSIDE 28
Heading into the second game of pool play the Panthers matched up with 1A Riverside (8-4 overall, 1-0 1A Northwest) with the winner advancing to the semifinal.
The Panthers didn’t score until 5:22 remained in the quarter on a Richardson jumper, as Powell trailed 3-2.
Powell gained the lead and started pushing it out, leading 14-7 before a Rebels timeout with 2:19 left in the first.
A steal by Hernandez pushed it to double digits shortly after and the Panthers led 23-9 after the first quarter.
Slow scoring hit the Panthers again early in the second quarter, before a scoring outburst hit just before the halftime break.
Ava Teten’s layup made it 38-18 with 1:54 left, with the quick run being capped off by a Kidd layup late to make it 48-18 at the half.
“It did start a little slower but somehow we still managed to come out with 48 points in the first half. Again, the girls were just clicking on all cylinders and doing a great job of anticipating, dictating and working really well together,” Kistler said.
Powell pushed it over 40 with an Erickson 3-pointer late in the third quarter, and the starters were pulled early in the final frame en route to a 75-28 win.
Erickson had a career high 26 points including five 3-pointers, the second time in her career she has matched the school record for threes in a game.
“Coy finally had a breakout game shooting against Riverside,” Kistler said. “It’s good to see her get her shot going … She’s finally found her rhythm and that’s great for us.”
Hernandez added 18 as the other Panther in double figures.
Hernandez led the Panthers with six assists and six steals while Kidd led with five rebounds.
The Panthers shot 60% as a team.
POWELL 49, CODY JV 20
The two wins Friday meant the Panthers advanced to the semifinals, taking on the Cody JV which defeated Thermopolis and Wind River on Friday.
Powell again got off to a strong start behind two 3-pointers by Erickson as the Panthers jumped out to an 11-0 lead early.
The Panthers carried the momentum through the rest of the first quarter and held a 20-3 lead going into the second.
The lead reached 29-3, before the Fillies found some offense late in the half and made it a 32-11 game at halftime.
A slow third quarter saw the two teams score relatively evenly, as the Panthers maintained a 39-19 lead heading into the final frame.
Powell finished the game while allowing some players to rest en route to a 49-20 win.
“We weren’t going hard at them again in the second half. We knew we had another game coming that night so it would be silly to continue to press and go all out,” Kistler said. “Our defense creates a lot of our offense and so that’s why the second half was just a little slower looking.”
Erickson led with 16 points and Floy finished with 13.
Hernandez led the Panthers with three steals.
POWELL 50, LOVELL 36
Winning that game meant the Panthers had a chance to defend their title, taking on the Bulldogs (7-5 overall, 0-1 3A West) in Worland.
Powell again started strong, making it 7-0 in the first 2:30 before a Lovell timeout.
The two teams went back and forth the rest of the quarter before the Panthers led 15-6 after the first.
Powell pushed it to double digits in the second quarter after a Hernandez 3-pointer with 5:25 left as the Panthers led 19-9.
Lovell cut the lead down to four, but a 3-pointer by Erickson held off the rally.
Powell held its lead and took a 25-19 advantage into the break.
The Bulldogs continued to chip away, as Powell only led 28-25 midway through the third.
Powell never allowed Lovell to tie or take the lead, and took a 32-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Richardson helped Powell pull away, scoring five straight points before a Kidd free throw gave Powell a double digit advantage before the midway point of the fourth.
Powell pulled away thanks to a 12-0 run, and finished the game for a 50-36 win to earn its second straight Big Horn Basin title.
“We changed it up in the fourth quarter and they didn’t have an answer for it,” Kistler said.
Hernandez led with 13 points just ahead of Erickson with 11.
Erickson led with nine rebounds, while Agee led with five assists and steals.
CONFERENCE OPENERS
Powell returns home this week, to open up conference play with a pair of difficult opponents.
The Panthers start with a rival game against the Cody Fillies (8-3 overall, 1-0 3A West) at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
“We’ll have to handle that penetration and dish that they do and not put them at the line,” Kistler said. “Just trying to dictate them rather than react to everything that they’re doing.”
Powell follows that up with another home game against the Worland Warriors (1-8) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
“We played a great weekend, very proud of the way that we played this weekend. I don’t care what level of teams we played, you’ve still got to be able to shoot the ball. I felt like we did that in all of our games, and just played really good team ball. Everybody’s doing great things from their role on the team and I’d just like to see that carry over into these first two games of our quadrant,” Kistler said.
