Trapper women roll past Miles

Host Region IX openers this week

A dominant opening quarter helped set the tone for the Northwest College women’s basketball team in its final nonconference game, scoring 39 points en route to a 108-63 road win over Miles Community College on Thursday night.

Wrapping up the nonconference schedule on the road the Trappers (13-5) took on the Pioneers (3-17) looking for the season sweep.

Northwest wasted no time establishing a lead in the contest, jumping out to a 13-0 advantage over the first two minutes before the Pioneers got on the board.

“We extended our pressure a little bit and just tried to get the pace the way we wanted from the start, and our kids did a good job of jumping into passing lanes,” coach Cody Helenbolt said. “The thing that was really nice is that we converted it. Sometimes, we get the steal, then in transition sometimes it’s hard to make a quick decision and then convert the layup. We did a really good job of passing and then a really good job of finishing which is good to see.”

The Trappers continued their early scoring spree, pushing the lead to over 20 up 30-9 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

The Trappers held a commanding 39-11 lead after the first quarter, giving them plenty of breathing room heading into the second quarter.

The lead did not quite reach 30 points in the second quarter, but the Trappers held a commanding advantage at the break up 58-32.

Early in the third quarter the Trappers finally pushed the lead to 30 up 62-32 and eventually pushed it over 40 up 77-36 midway through the third quarter.

“We’ve got a fun group because we have 10, and my first five and my second five, any given day it can be one of the groups looks a little better than the other one,” Helenbolt said. “Sometimes that can be tough. But in a game where you’re just cruising, it’s fun because you can just say ‘hey, go hard for four minutes’ then put the next ones in and just kind of keep rolling.”

The lead reached as much as 53 early in the fourth quarter, as the Trappers cruised to a 108-63 win.

Jai’La Porter led the Trappers in scoring with 19, while Emma Pique, Sydnee Harris, Bianca Silva and Kelsi Nicholson each had 12 points. Tayva Phillips was the final Trapper in double figures with 11.

“I’ve been telling our kids that’s our advantage. Just keep sharing the ball. Find the hot hand, find the open person and they’re not going to be able to just slow down one person,” Helenbolt said. “If we take care of the ball, play tough on defense and share the ball we’re going to be tough to beat.”

Nicholson added seven rebounds to lead the Trappers, while Silva added six assists and steals to lead Northwest in both categories.

REGION IX OPENERS

Northwest will return home this week, kicking off Region IX North play at Cabre Gym.

The first matchup for the Trappers will be today (Thursday) at 5:30 p.m. against Casper College (13-5).

The Trappers will welcome in Western Wyoming (13-5) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

“We just want to come out and compete. I think we’ve been kind of built on hard work, and we want to continue doing that no matter who we’re playing,” Helenbolt said. “I’ve been really happy with how confidently we’ve attacked everything and I’m just looking for the kids to do the same thing in region play, just attack it with confidence. We know it’s going to be tougher, it’s not going to be the same but we know that we don’t have to necessarily change what we’re doing just because it’s a better team.”
