Starting the second half of the season the Trappers (12-5) took on the WY All-Stars, a team composed of former basketball players from around the area.

Northwest’s slow start allowed the All-Stars to remain in the game early, as the Trappers led 10-6 midway through the first quarter.

“Honestly the first couple minutes were tough,” coach Cody Helenbolt said. “We didn’t start fast but we adjusted.”

Finishing the quarter strong the Trappers pushed their lead out to double digits, leading 20-10 after the first.

Northwest carried that momentum into the second, building the lead out over 20 points after a Taylee Carlson jumper made it 41-20 with 3:20 remaining in the half.

Continuing to press the initiative the Trappers made it a 51-25 ballgame at the half.

The lead reached 29 midway through the third quarter after an Elise Swan 3-pointer made it 61-29 and the Trappers continued to cruise.

Northwest led 71-44 after the third quarter, and cruised to a 92-57 win to open the new year.

After the victory, Helenbolt noted the strong shooting of the Trappers, who went 15-36 (41.7%) from 3-point range, as a positive sign coming out of the break.

“We shot really well which helps make everything a little bit easier,” Helenbolt said. “We kind of had to shoot really well because we were out-sized big time … If we can do that (shoot well), we’re tough. We’re really tough to stop because I know we can also attack and do some other things.”

Carolina Ruiz led the Trappers with 18 points, Emma Pique and Taylee Carlson each had 14, Kelsi Nicholson had 12 points and led with nine rebounds, Bianca Silva had 14 points, six assists and four steals while Tayva Phillips had 10 points as the other Trapper in double figures.

Amy Buck led the All-Stars with 16 points while Addy Thorington finished with an 11 point, 11 rebound double-double.

FINAL NON-CONFERENCE GAME

Northwest set out on the road Thursday night to take on Miles Community College (2-15) in its final nonconference game of the season at 5 p.m.

“Just want to keep kind of tuning up and making sure we’re executing this stuff that I want us to be able to execute,” Helenbolt said. “It’s not going to be perfect, still kind of coming back from break, but the more we can kind of fine tune it, the better going into a really, really tough week next week.”

The Trappers defeated the Pioneers 84-35 in Powell back in November, but Helenbolt isn’t sure what to expect after the Pioneers coach stepped down since that contest.

Northwest will return home next weekend to start Region IX play against Casper College on Thursday and Western Wyoming on Saturday.
