The Northwest College men’s basketball team finished a long road swing with two wins in three games over five days. The Trappers defeated Laramie County Community College 106-95 on Friday and Eastern Wyoming 73-68 on Saturday before losing to Central Wyoming 55-52 on Tuesday night.
NORTHWEST 106, LCCC 95
Kicking off the weekend in Cheyenne the Trappers (15-6 overall, 3-2 Region IX North) took on the Golden Eagles (9-12 overall, 2-1 Region IX North).
LCCC came out with a purpose over the first two minutes, gaining a 10-0 lead and forcing a timeout from Northwest.
The Trappers found a way to get back in the contest over the next several minutes, trailing 12-8 before the Golden Eagles pushed the lead back out to 17-8.
Despite getting back on track with scoring, the Golden Eagles continued maintaining their lead as Northwest trailed 22-16 midway through the half.
The Trappers got within a possession several times, but LCCC continued to hold off any Trapper runs and maintained the advantage.
The lead stretched back out for the Golden Eagles, who made it a 40-32 lead with 3:30 minutes left in the half.
LCCC’s advantage stretched back out to double digits, reaching as many as 12 before a late layup by Kaden Christensen made it a 48-38 game at the break.
Over the first five minutes of the second half the Trappers were unable to significantly chip away at the lead, as they trailed 59-50.
Northwest finally went on its run, outscoring the Golden Eagles over the next five minutes and claiming the lead for the first time 64-63 after a Colin Hayes free throw.
The Trappers started getting stops, but were clinging to a 76-75 lead.
Drew Larson started the next Trapper run with a pair of free throws, and later capped off the push with a 3-pointer to make it a 91-79 game with 4:30 minutes left.
Northwest led by as many as 13, up 98-85, before one last push by LCCC tightened the scoreline.
The Golden Eagles got the score down to 99-93, before free throws down the stretch helped the Trappers pull away for good in the 106-95 win.
Larson led the Trappers with a 30 point, 17 rebound double-double.
Hayes added 27 points, Tessi Thong had 21 points and six assists while Christensen had 10 points as the final Trapper in double figures.
NORTHWEST 73, EASTERN WYOMING 68
In Torrington the Trappers took on the Lancers (5-16 overall, 1-3 Region IX North) on Saturday.
Both teams came out firing over the first four minutes, as the Lancers held an 11-9 lead.
The teams exchanged runs, starting with Northwest going on a 7-0 run before Eastern responded with a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead.
Eastern built the lead to as many as five, but the Trappers kept it close and eventually tied the game at 27 with just under five minutes left.
Heading into halftime the Lancers ended with a stronger push, as they led 35-31 at the break.
Both teams found ways to the basket early in the second half, but the Trappers trailed 45-42 five minutes in.
Northwest finally regained the lead after a Christensen layup with 12:20 left, and quickly expanded on it to a 52-47 advantage a minute later.
Eastern replied with a quick 10-0 run over the next two minutes, making it a 57-52 game in favor of the hosts with nine minutes left.
That advantage hit as many as seven, and Northwest trailed 66-62 with just over two minutes left, before one final push by a Larson hook shot helped spark one last run.
The Trappers tied the game twice up until 68, and Eastern had a chance to gain the lead with free throws with 50 seconds left, but missed both before Larson gave Northwest the lead for good on a dunk with 28 seconds left.
After a miss by Eastern, Thong was fouled and put in a pair of free throws to make it a 72-68 lead, and Christensen added one more to make the final score 73-68.
Larson led the Trappers once again with 24 points, as Hayes added 15.
Christensen had 11 points and led with eight rebounds, alongside Preston Condie who had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Thong led with five assists and five steals.
CENTRAL WYOMING 55, NORTHWEST 52
Ending with the third game in five days the Trappers made the trip to Riverton on Tuesday night, taking on the Rustlers (6-16 overall, 1-4 Region IX North).
Scoring was hard to come by for both teams early in the contest, as the Trappers trailed 14-13 midway through the first half.
Central led by as many as seven in the opening 20 minutes, but the Trappers pushed back and tied the contest at 26 going into the locker room.
Early in the second half the two teams exchanged the lead several times, but neither created separation as the Trappers and Rustlers were deadlocked at 38 midway through.
A 10-2 stretch over the next five minutes of game action gave the Rustlers a cushion, leading 48-40 with just under five minutes remaining.
Northwest trailed by as many as 12 with 3:08 left, but had one last push remaining.
The Trappers pulled within a single possession, trailing 53-51 after a pair of Thong free throws with just over a minute remaining.
It later got to one point after Christensen split a pair of free throws, but Central sank a pair with 12 seconds left to make it a three point game.
The Trappers had a chance to tie, but Christensen’s 3-pointer was blocked at the buzzer and Central escaped with a 55-52 win.
Stats for the contest were not available at press time.
GILLETTE GAME
Northwest heads back out on the road this weekend, making the trek to Gillette at 4 p.m. on Saturday to take on the Pronghorns (19-2 overall, 2-1 Region IX North).
That will be the final game of the road swing as the Trappers return home next weekend to take on Eastern Wyoming and LCCC on Feb. 7-8.
