Dear editor:
Who among us is not disgusted with officeholders from both political parties who entrench and enrich themselves in Congress for so long that they are seemingly term limited only by death?
The name recognition and fundraising advantages of incumbency, make it nearly impossible for new vibrant candidates to unseat career politicians.
The seniority system in Congress rewards longevity with committee chairmanships or ranking minority status on committees. The status is utilized to establish the rules for the legislative process, permitting lobby groups to write legislation, and laughably pass judgment on the ethical standards of their colleagues.
All of this and more is done, regardless of mental competence or fidelity to the U.S. Constitution.
The framers of the Constitution never envisioned such a concentration and continuation of power in Congress.
Convention of States Action is a grassroots organization dedicated to the principles of self-governance and blunting the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.
We are working to convince at least 34 state legislatures to activate the second clause of Article V of the Constitution and compel Congress to call a convention during which commissioners sent by state legislatures will discuss and propose amendments such as term limits. Nineteen states (Wyoming is not included) have passed the resolution thus far.
