Windy, cooler weather led to some difficult matchups in Cody on Thursday, as the Powell Panther girls’ tennis team defeated Cody 4-1 while the boys came up short 4-1.
The lone loss for Powell came at No. 1 singles, where Naomi Whipple fell against Brenna Foote 6-2, 6-1.
“She knew she’d be tested and challenged with that match because Brenna’s got a good game,” coach Joe Asay said. “She knew she’d have to come out and play some good tennis, and just couldn’t quite get it together.”
Bailee Allred continued her winning ways at No. 2 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kimber Christler.
“Hailey (Dansie), the gal that’s playing the two singles (for Cody), was dealing with some health issues so she did not play. Kimber was an alternate stepping into that role,” Asay said. “So we’ll look forward to Bailee getting that chance to get out there and play Hailey on Tuesday.”
Isabelle Urbach and Kyra Morrow took the win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Molly Buckles and Isabelle Paddock in three sets, winning 6-4, losing 1-6 before winning the super tiebreaker 10-5.
Elaina Kousoulos and Emily Jensen earned a comeback victory at No. 2 doubles, losing the first set 6-7 (6-8), before winning the second set 7-5 and a super tiebreaker set 10-4 over Kenley Stevens and Hallie Despain.
At No. 3 doubles, Noelle Leighton and Anna David got the win over McKenna Hill and Bella Beachler in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
On the boys’ side, Nathan Preator came up short against Nick Stewart 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Ryan Barrus got the only win for the Panther boys at No. 2 singles, defeating Beau Beachler in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
“He [Barrus] started out the season with some shoulder issues. So it’s probably worked out well for him to have the opportunity to get out there and play with a partner. But he seems to be doing really good and stepping in and playing some good tennis at that two singles spot for sure,” Asay said. “He [Beachler] certainly made Ryan be patient and kind of be willing to get out there and hit some tennis balls.”
In a close matchup at No. 1 doubles, Calvin Opps and Memphis Solberg came up short against Bryson Laing and Zach Schwab 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
Kazdyn Lee and Isaac Dunsey fell to Isaac Woods and Wesley Law at No. 2 doubles in straight 6-2 sets, while Jonathan Clark and Josh Waite lost to Cole McLeod and Alex Stewart at No. 3 doubles 6-1, 6-4.
The Panthers won’t have to wait long to get a second shot at the Broncs and Fillies, as the return leg for the matches will be in Powell today (Tuesday) at 3 p.m.
This meet will have more importance for both teams, as the matches will count towards the conference standings as the end of the regular season inches closer.
“Both sides had to deal with the conditions (in Cody) — so far it looks like the forecast looks decent,” Asay said. “Just looking forward to coming out there. It’s a new day and hopefully fresh beginning for the week.”
