Dear editor:
Having Riedl and Reed family in Cody, Basin and Greybull, I read the Powell Tribune article: “Sen. Al Simpson of Cody dies at age 93.” I started following him back in the late 1970s just before I became eligible to vote. He was a folksy, dynamic man. I agreed with him on some things. Yet, I differed with him on other things.
He was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. Likewise, I became a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner. I also joined the York Rite, which afforded me additional Masonic knowledge via the Masonic degrees of Royal Arch Mason, Knight of Malta, and Knight Templar.
Alan Simpson and I enjoyed “friendship-societies.” He and I also relished our individualism. I supported his view on lowering the atrociously high national debt which can be blamed on many past Congresses who literally “passed the buck” by letting a problem snowball out of control. Alan Simpson had a unique personality. Occasionally prickly, and occasionally chummy. He will be missed.
Sincerely,
James A. Marples
