Rodeo gears up for spring

The winter has come and gone and the Northwest College rodeo team is set to start the second half of its season, heading to Bozeman, Montana, to kick off spring events.

In team standings the Trapper men sit fourth with 864 points, as Montana State University Northern is third with 1,021 points, University of Montana Western is second with 2,607 points and Montana State University is first with 3,613 points. The NWC women sit fifth with 41 points, well behind the next placed team in University of Montana Western with 750.16 points.

Individually for the Trappers, Christopher Staley sits third in bull riding with 160 points; Weston LaPierre is fourth in tie down roping with 226 points and tied for 10th in team roping heeler with 107 points; Nathan Ruth is sixth in tie down roping with 160 points and 12th in team roping heeler with 105 points; Gary Grant is tied for 10th in team roping header with 107 points and 14th in tie down roping with 69 points; Chance Marshall is 12th in team roping header with 105 points. Nicole Groeneveld is the lone Trapper cowgirl tied for 14th in the barrel racing with 41 points.

The spring season will take place solely in Montana, starting with a pair of rodeos at Montana State University with the first rodeo taking place today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday), and the second rodeo taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

The Trappers will be looking to improve their standing over the next four weeks to try and earn their spot at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper in early June.
