One final home meet was coupled with a trip to Lander for one of the toughest competitions to date for the Powell Panther swim and dive team, which finished second in the home triangular before placing sixth at the Bruce Gresly Memorial on Saturday.
POWELL TRIANGULAR
At the Powell triangular on Friday the Panthers saw familiar opponents in Cody and Worland, as the Panthers won two individual events.
Those victories came from Hugh Carpenter, who won the 50 free in 23.68 seconds and the 100 fly in 58.66 seconds.
Two Panthers placed second, as Conner Mayes was second in the 100 free (56.66) and Will Fuller was second in the 500 free (6:15.3).
A couple of third place finishes came from Trystan Preator in the 50 free (26.55) and Taggart Shumway in diving (189.85).
During the meet the Panthers honored their seniors as they competed at the Powell Aquatic Center for the final time.
“That’s always kind of a fun meet. It was kind of a bummer that it was on a Friday, we had to turn around and get up early on Saturday,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “We like to hang out and do a celebration with them afterwards and everything. We still did, it just wasn’t as big as normal because we had to get up early the next day. But it’s always great to have that meet.”
Powell finished second with 84.5 points as Cody won with 175.5 and Worland finished with 52.
BRUCE GRESLY MEMORIAL
Heading down to Lander on Saturday the Panthers took part in an invitational that included most of the 3A teams in the state alongside 4A Cheyenne South and Evanston.
Carpenter again led the Panthers with a strong day, finishing third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.56 and third in the 100 fly with a time of 59.11.
“Hugh had a great weekend … It’s great to see him getting there because he had such a slow start,” Warren said.
Other top eight finishes for the Panthers included Fuller in sixth in the 200 IM (2:20.44) and the 100 back (1:01.56); Preator took sixth in the 100 fly (1:04.98) and Shumway placed eighth in diving, completing 11 dives for a score of 246.65.
“I do think having more teams there helped push our swimmers, which is partially why I think we had such a great day on Saturday for swimming,” Warren said. “They did have a lot of personal best times on that day, it was great to see those other teams and swimmers that we haven’t competed against at all this year.”
Powell finished sixth as a team with 96 points, as Lander ran away with the team competition by over 100 points over second place with 366 to Cody’s 223.
FINAL REGULAR SEASON MEETS
Powell heads out on the road for the remainder of the season, starting with a dual today (Tuesday) at 5 p.m. in Cody.
The Panthers then head over the mountain to take part in an invitational in Buffalo at 3 p.m. on Friday as their final regular season meet.
“It will be a good Powell-Cody, fun meet to have in the middle of the week here,” Warren said. “Then we will go to Buffalo and we will see Cody, Worland and Buffalo at that meet … We’ll start tapering off some of the ones who haven’t quite qualified yet and see if we can’t get them a little bit closer to qualifying.”
Powell will stay close to home as it heads into the postseason, making the short trip to Cody on Feb. 7-8 for the conference meet.
