PHS swim sees new opponents in Worland

The Powell High School girls’ swim and dive team used a short trip south to take on some new opponents, as the Panthers went to the Warrior Invitational in Worland and saw two new schools as well as some familiar faces on Saturday.

Two new qualifying marks were reached, as Lynea Christensen added the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 39.28 seconds, taking fourth; and Autumn Kleinfeldt added a swimming event, qualifying in the 50 free with a time of 28.99 seconds, taking sixth.

“It was awesome (seeing Autumn qualify). It was a little frantic, she almost missed her race, but she made it and then she rocked it,” coach Bailey Jackson said. “Her split in the 200 free relay was even faster.”

Kleinfeldt also had the highest placement of the day, taking third in the diving with a score of 184.25.

Additional top 10 finishes for the Panthers included Christensen who took seventh in the diving (151); Stella Leighton placed seventh in the 100 fly (1:24.25); Sophie Erkkila was seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.98) and Lilly Pittman was 10th in the 100 breast (1:35.61).

The highest placing relay for the Panthers was the 200 medley relay, as the team of April Weckler, Pittman, Christensen and Tempie Day was fourth with a 2:24.4.

Nearing the midseason mark, the Panthers still have just two qualifiers for the state meet, but Jackson said the Panthers are continuing to work hard and feel some could reach qualifying standards soon.

“We’re working hard. There are a few girls who are close, so we’re working on cleaning up their races and working on technique,” Jackson said.

In the team standings the Panthers saw familiar opponents in Riverton, Buffalo, Cody, Worland and Newcastle, but added new competition in Kemmerer and Douglas.

Powell finished fifth as a team with 196 points, while Riverton ran away with the title with 496.

This week will be short for the Panthers but won’t include any travel, as they stay at home on Thursday at 5 p.m. to take on Park County rival Cody in a dual.

“We’re going to be swimming off events. It’s good for the girls to try events they normally wouldn’t. It gives them experience and shows them that they can do it even if they think they can’t,” Jackson said.
