A busy couple of weeks has seen the Powell High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team go 3-0 at the Big Horn Basin Classic on Jan. 16-17 before going 1-1 against Cody and Worland on the road on Jan. 22-23 to move to 9-2 overall.
Powell got off to a fast start against Greybull with a 21-2 lead after the first quarter, before cruising to a 38-22 win to open the tournament.
Addie Gillett led with 19 points, Sam Edgell had eight, Veronica Kovach had seven and Charlie Eastman and Breiyah Bonander had two each.
Due to low numbers, the Panthers played only one half against Burlington, leading 32-2 after the first quarter and rolling to a 40-13 win against the Huskies.
“We talked before the game about coming out aggressive and making the most of only having two quarters to play, and the girls responded with an unbelievable first period,” coach Troy Hildebrand said.
Kovach led with 13 points, Gillette, Autumn Kidd and Edgell each had six, Eastman had four while Jordyn Nelson added three and Bonander had two.
In the final game, another shortened contest greeted the Panthers against Wind River.
Powell again jumped out to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 34-10 win.
Kovach led with 12 points, Gillett had seven, Stella Shoopman and Kidd had four each, Edgell, Bonander and Aspen French had two points each while Eastman had one.
Heading to Cody on Thursday the Panthers fell behind 15-5 after the first quarter and were unable to recover from the early deficit in a 48-31 loss to the Fillies.
Edgell led with nine points, Kovach had eight, Gillett had seven, Kidd had five and Shoopman had two.
Continuing to Worland on Friday the Panthers built a 15-0 lead midway through the second quarter, and were up 15-5 at the half.
Worland tightened the scoreline in the second half but the Panthers had an answer each time in a 36-29 win.
French led with 12 points, Edgell added 10, Kovach had six while Gillett and Shoopman had four each.
Powell heads to Lovell for a contest Thursday before hosting Buffalo on Friday as Hildebrand said they continue to adjust to injuries and illness.
