The Powell High School indoor track and field team made program history at the state tournament in Gillette last weekend, as the Panther girls won their first indoor track trophy, placing third, while the boys took eighth with school records falling again.
Nine different records fell for the Panthers, as records for the girls fell at the hands of Kaytlee George in the 200 meters and 400 meters with times of 26.93 and 1:00.75 seconds, while Karee Cooley broke the 3200 meter record with a time of 11:43.43, Paige Sanders broke her own long jump record with a leap of 16 feet, 5 1/4 inches, and the 4x200 relay team of Ashlee Jacobsen, Sanders, George and Naomi Whipple set a new record with a time of 1:53.13.
On the boys’ side, new record holders included Tanner Seifert in the 200 meters (23.82), Korbyn Warren in the 1600 meters (4:45.45), the 4x200 relay team of Harper Havron, Breckyn Kobbe, Seifert and Lincoln Crawford (1:36.38) and the 4x400 relay of David Stearns, Brayden Benander, Alex Werner and Warren (3:44.86).
Individually the Panther girls were led by Cooley, who took second in both the 1600 meters (5:33.65) as well as the 3200 meters, adding a fifth place finish in the 800 meters (2:27.45).
Sanders added top three finishes of her own, taking second in the triple jump (35-3 1/2) and third in the long jump.
George earned two top four finishes with her school records, taking third in the 400 meters and fourth in the 200 meters.
Additional top eight individual finishes included Audrey Johnson, who took fourth in the 400 meters (1:01.64); Anyston Keller took fifth in the 3200 meters (12:27.67) and seventh in the 1600 meters (5:49.97); Anai Torres took sixth in shot put (35-5) and Kate Williams tied for seventh in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet.
Overall the Panther girls finished with 77.5 points, 7.5 ahead of fourth placed Worland, while Cody just edged out Torrington by half a point with 106.
“The girls worked really hard this season to make history and earn the first trophy for indoor track in school history,” coach Scott Smith said. “Even better, they didn’t rest on that once a trophy was clinched, they fought hard to finish strong and outdistance Worland for third.”
The boys had several top finishes as well, led by Warren who took third in the 1600 and 3200 meters (10:40.3).
Crawford tied for fifth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.45 seconds.
Colin Walker added an eighth place finish in the 3200 meters (11:06.08) as the final Panther in the top eight.
Seifert was 10th in the 200 meters for his school record effort.
All four of the Panther relays placed in the top five with the 4x200 relay taking third, the 4x800 relay fourth and the 4x400 and 1600 sprint medley relays fifth.
Powell finished eighth with 35.5 points just half a point behind Lander, as Cody took the team title with 109 points.
After the successes of the indoor season, Smith said he and the Panthers are excited for the outdoor season, as they have had plenty of time already outdoors with the nice winter weather.
“I am really excited for outdoor, as are our kids,” Smith said. “With spring break coming up, they can get a well earned rest and come back ready to keep the momentum going with their friends that have been working hard in other sports/activities. We were fortunate to practice outside as much as we did and being out in the sun is just a great way to enjoy spring.”
