A short trip to Cody on Tuesday allowed the Powell Panther girls’ wrestling team to get in several matches against both Huntley Project and the host Fillies after a quick turnaround from a weekend tournament.
After a scheduling error as Laurel was unable to attend the meet, the Panthers, Red Devils and Fillies did their best to find a match for each opponent.
“All of us coaches got together and matched up as many girls as we could to try and give every girl a match. Some girls had to wrestle at least two matches so that the majority of the girls would have a match,” coach David Holland said.
The two early matches featured Ellidi Joy facing off with a Cody wrestler at 170 pounds, as Joy fell via pin, and Eleasah Horsley earned a pin at 115 pounds.
“She (Joy) is a freshman and this is her first year wrestling,” Holland said.
In the third match of the night Caydee Eden returned the favor against her opponent from Huntley Project at 100 pounds, as Eden bested Gracie Bingen 10-5 in their bout. Bingen had won the third place match against Eden just three days prior 6-1 in the Bozeman tournament.
“Caydee made those adjustments and did a good job in her rematch,” Holland said.
The final match before the boys’ dual saw Harley Spinden fall via pin against a Huntley Project wrestler in the first period at 120 pounds.
Following the boys’ dual the girls got back on the mat, as River James fell via pin just before the end of the first period to a Red Devil wrestler.
Horsley returned for her second match of the night, and earned a second pin, defeating a Cody wrestler in the first period.
Joy returned for her second match of the night, but fell via an 18-1 tech fall in the second period.
Wrapping up the evening for the girls was Allison LeBlanc, who earned a pin late in the second period over her Huntley Project opponent.
“I feel like we responded well from the quick turnaround time to compete after a long weekend of wrestling,” Holland said. “The girls came out and wrestled hard.”
The busy week doesn’t slow down for the Panthers, as they will now prepare to head on the road to Douglas to take part in the Shane Shatto Memorial on Friday and Saturday, getting some new competition while continuing to improve each week.
“We are looking forward to Douglas, as we will see a lot of southern Wyoming teams that we will not see until Ron Thon or state. We will also see some schools from Nebraska and Colorado,” Holland said. “We have some things that we need to work on that I would like to see before Douglas, more attacking from our feet and more movement from bottom.”
Powell will then head to Lander for a dual on Jan. 23 before a tournament on Jan. 24-25.
