After being unable to travel the first weekend of the season the Powell High School indoor track and field team made its way over the mountains to Gillette for the first time this year.
The Panthers kicked off the season with a bang as senior Kinley Cooley broke her own record in the 1600 meters in one of her two victories, and the boys 4x800 team set a new school record.
Cooley got things started with a victory in the 800 meters, winning in a closely contested race with a time of 2:32.95.
She followed that up with a convincing win in the 1600, pulling away early and cruising to a 10 second victory with a time of 5:25.7, faster than even her outdoor school record time last year.
“In the 1600 she ran away from the pack immediately and was never challenged,” coach Scott Smith said. “The 800 she got boxed in and really had to fight to win. Both races were fun to watch, just in different ways.”
The other school record that fell for the Panthers was the boys’ 4x800 record, run by the quartet of Colin Walker, Troy Cheatham, Thomas Shuman and Korbyn Warren.
Those four completed the race in a time of 9:11.83 to take fifth place overall, breaking the old school record of 9:28.49.
Cooley was one of two Panthers to earn qualifying times for the state meet at the end of the season, as Paige Sanders also earned a spot in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
The Panther’s other top eight finishes came from Anai Torres taking fifth in the shot put (34-9 3/4), Audrey Johnson taking seventh in the 400 meters (1:07.36) and Karee Cooley taking eighth in the 1600 meters (5:48.66).
The Powell girls finished eighth overall in the standings among 3A and 4A teams, but were the second 3A team with 32 points, trailing Cody by three points. The Thunder Basin girls won the team title with 102 points.
The Panther boys had one individual top 10 finisher, as Lincoln Crawford took 10th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.96.
Despite it being a lot of competitors’ first time in an indoor track setting, Smith said he was proud of how the team competed with the tight corners in a new atmosphere.
“The kids cornered well, a great start to the season,” Smith said. “I was really pleased with the way kids got after the new and unfamiliar atmosphere.”
The Panthers tied with Lovell for 15th with four points, as the Sheridan boys ran away with the team title with 120.5 points, and Cody was the top 3A boys’ team with 97 points.
Following that first meet the Panthers returned home to practice over the following two weeks, before heading back to Gillette on Friday, Feb. 7.
“The next couple of weeks will either be technique or conditioning, with an emphasis on conditioning,” Smith said.
