Records fell at the final meet of the regular season for the Powell High School indoor track and field team, as the Panthers hosted the Park County Invitational in Gillette on Friday.

Individual records fell in three different races, as Audrey Johnson set the standard in the 200 meters with a time of 27.14 seconds to take sixth, Karee Cooley set a new record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.39 to take third and Paige Sanders broke her triple jump record for a fifth consecutive meet with a winning leap of 36 feet, 9 inches.

The other school record to fall came in the 4x200 relay, as the quartet of Harper Havron, Breckyn Kobbe, Tanner Seifert and Lincoln Crawford set a new record with a time of 1:38.55 to take fifth.

“Our kids had another outstanding performance with more school records going down,” coach Scott Smith said.

Additional wins for the Panthers came from the girls, as Cooley took the top spot in the 1600 meters (5:32) and Anyston Keller won the 3200 meters (12:59.44).

Additional top eight finishes for the Panther girls came from Kaytlee George, who placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:02.86) and seventh in the 200 meters (27.44); Sanders took fourth in the long jump (16-1); Johnson added a fifth place finish in the 400 meters (1:02.89); Natalee Laing was seventh in the 3200 meters (15:10.42) and Anai Torres was eighth in the shot put (34-4).

The Panther girls were fourth overall and the top 3A team with 66 points, just ahead of Cody who was half a point behind and Worland which was two points behind.

Top eight finishes for the Panther boys included Korbyn Warren who placed third in the 1600 meters (4:49.1) and eighth in the 800 meters (2:13.51); Crawford tied for third in the 55 meter hurdles (8.34) and Colin Walker was fifth in the 3200 meters.

In the team standings the Panthers finished 10th, fifth among 3A teams as Douglas was the top  with 43 points.

Smith praised his team’s consistent improvement this season, believing that the Panthers are on the right course to end the year.

“The team has done a nice job of continued improvement and everyone looks healthy going into state, so I think we will have a lot of fun this weekend,” Smith said.

Powell heads back to Gillette for a sixth and final time this weekend, taking part in the 3A State Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Field events begin Friday at 2:30 p.m. followed by track events at 3:30 p.m. Field events Saturday start at 8:30 a.m. and track events at 9 a.m.

With the field narrowing down to 14 with a number of bigger teams not participating, Smith is hopeful the Panthers will bring home a number of medals and contend for a team trophy on both sides.

“We are hoping to bring home a lot of medals and let the computer figure out the team scores,” Smith said. “Both teams have shots at bringing home team trophies, but indoor track is very unpredictable.”
