Two Powell High School athletes, sophomore Cobey Khan and senior Audrey Johnson, made the journey to Pocatello, Idaho, competing in the annual Simplot Games at Idaho State University on Feb. 19-21.
In the biggest meet of the year the Panthers saw plenty of competition from across the western United States including Utah, Idaho, California and Colorado among others as well as Canada and Australia.
The track provides a unique opportunity, with a wooden track featuring banked corners allowing for a different experience and typically faster times in the event.
Johnson advanced the furthest in the competition, placing eighth in the prelims of the 400 meter dash out of 84 competitors with a time of 1 minute, 1.34 seconds, before taking 15th overall in the finals despite dropping her time to 1:01.26.
Khan competed in a deep field with over 140 competitors in the 60 meter dash, finishing tied for 78th with a time of 7.67 seconds.
The Panthers return to Wyoming for the final meet of the regular season this weekend, as Powell alongside Cody will team up to “host” the Park County Invitational in Gillette on Friday.
Powell returns to Gillette next weekend for the 3A State Championships on Friday and Saturday to end the indoor season.
