In a competitive 3A West Regional Track and Field meet the Powell High School girls’ track and field team added some final qualifiers for the state meet and finished third in Pinedale on Friday and Saturday.

Powell had one victory on the weekend, as Karee Cooley won the 1600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 24.83 seconds.

Second places were aplenty, as Kaytlee George took second in the 400 meters in 58.65 seconds, Paige Sanders placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 10 1/4 inches, and Nalani Jordan was second in the discus with a throw of 129 feet, 9 inches.

Third place finishes for the Panthers included George in the 200 meters (27.26), Abigail Visocky in the 100 meter hurdles (16.7) and Jordan in the shot put (36-7 1/4).

Visocky was one of several Panthers who earned her spot at the state meet with a qualifying time or top eight individual finish, as she added a fourth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles (48.57), Sam Edgell took fourth in the shot put (36-6 3/4), Keylyn Knuth cleared 4-9 in the high jump and took fifth, Lucy Ostermiller placed sixth in the triple jump (33), Kindyle Floy was seventh in the 100 meter dash (13.66) and Kate Miller was eighth in the pole vault (8-6).

“Our girls did a great job of competing and getting those top eight places to qualify for state, including a couple of relays that we had to enter groups of kids that hadn’t prequalified,” coach Scott Smith said. “That will be a big help going into the state meet.”

Smith added that Visocky had large personal records of almost a second in the 100 meter hurdles and over two seconds in the 300 meter hurdles, while Edgell had a 3 foot PR in the shot put to qualify.

Additional top eight finishes included Cooley who placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:24.29); Anyston Keller placed fourth in the 3200 meters (12:44.95) and seventh in the 1600 meters (5:45.76); Sanders took fourth in the long jump (16-7 1/2); Anai Torres placed sixth in the discus (109-2) while Audrey Johnson was seventh in the 200 meters (27.8) and eighth in the 400 meters (1:01.89).

“We had quite a few girls that weren’t feeling great that did a great job of performing well in tough circumstances,” Smith said.

As a team the Panthers scored 121 points, finishing in a comfortable third as Worland took the team crown by a single point over Lander with 141.5.

Powell heads back on the road this week for the final time this season, heading to Casper for the Wyoming State Track and Field Championships starting on Thursday.

Events Thursday kick off at 2 p.m. with the 3200 meters as well as several field events, while Friday and Saturday action start at 9 a.m. with the final event, the 4x400 relay, scheduled for 3:50 p.m. on Saturday.

“I think we will be back to full strength next week and look forward to seeing a lot of kids wearing a lot of medals around their necks,” Smith said.
