Returning closer to home for the second meet of the season the Powell Panther girls’ swim team finished fourth at the Terry Bartlett Invitational on Friday in Cody, adding new state qualifiers in the process.
Kaitlin Diver added both the 200 IM and the 500 free to her qualifying list with times of 2 minutes, 29.54 seconds, and 5:49.91 respectively. She placed second in the 500 free and fourth in the 200 IM.
Patricia Christensen added a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.64 and a fourth place finish in the 200 free in 2:15.43 to qualify in each event.
Two freshmen earned qualifying times for the state meet, as Daisy Carpenter qualified in the 100 back (1:13.88) for her first event and Lynea Christensen qualified in the 500 free after taking seventh (6:34.17).
“Our freshman class is progressing very nicely,” coach Bob Smartt said. “The best news of the meet was to have Daisy achieve her state cut in the 100 backstroke in only her second high school swim meet … Our other four freshmen continue to achieve significant personal best times.”
The Panthers faced tough competition in Cody, with three of the top teams in the state in attendance. The Panthers finished with 152.5 points.
Cody finished just ahead of Powell with 193.5 while Buffalo was second with 313.5 and Lander first with 389 points.
“Buffalo was extremely impressive at the Cody meet. They now look likely to replace Cody as the second best 3A team in the state,” Smartt said.
The Panthers return home this weekend for the first time this season, hosting the Gene Dozah Invite at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The highest placing Panther relay in Cody was the 200 free relay finishing fourth, with Smartt noting that will be a point of emphasis for this week.
“Our relays had a mixed performance at Cody, and they become a big focus this weekend at our home Gene Dozah meet,” Smartt said.
Powell is expected to bring in nearly all of its conference foes to the event, seeing more tough competition early in the season.
