Continuing a strong season on the mat, the Powell High School girls’ wrestling team finished seventh at the Ron Thon Memorial in Riverton on Thursday and Friday, as Allison LeBlanc added one more title at 110 pounds to her resume.
LeBlanc started with a 37 second pin in her opening match, before adding two more pins to reach the semifinal.
She recorded a 7-3 decision in the semifinal. Then, a penalty late in the third period of the championship bout against Pinedale’s McKinzie Mortensen gave LeBlanc the 1-0 win.
“That’s another huge milestone in her high school career,” coach Jeriah Horsley said. “Ron Thon has a lot of pressure … It’s not an easy task to do.”
Powell also added two more finalists for the weekend, as Eleasah Horsley returned to the lineup at 115 pounds, winning three straight via pin after a first round bye to reach the championship, but falling just short in the championship bout 9-5.
Nalani Jordan was the other finalist, looking for a repeat at 140 pounds, winning three straight via pin after a first round bye to reach the final before falling via pin in the championship bout.
The final placer for the Panthers was Caydee Eden at 100 pounds, winning her first three matches by pin to reach the semifinals, before losing via pin.
She won the consolation semifinals via pin before falling in a close 8-5 decision in the third palace match to take fourth overall.
Avery LeBlanc picked up two wins at 105 pounds to go 2-2, and Elora Joy was the final wrestler going 0-2 at 145 pounds.
“We’ve got to clean up some stuff. Just work on some confidence really … They showed a lot of grit and composure. Kind of what we’re looking for out of our girls to be in those high pressure situations like that and just go off and wrestle,” coach Horsley said. “Good wrestlers will capitalize on small mistakes … We really got that high pressure feeling in Wyoming … It gets them used to what to expect, and that way they wrestle a little bit better at the tournament that really matters which is going to be state.”
In the team standings the Panthers finished seventh, earning 113 points with their six wrestlers, by far the fewest in the top 10 as Kemmerer in 10th was the next closest with nine wrestlers, but were still 12 points behind the Panthers as every team ahead of Powell had at least double the competitors.
“That speaks volumes about the effort, our depth and the resilience of our girls,” coach Horsley said. “It’s fun being their coach, fun to watch them wrestle and watch them work, as well as how well they work together … If they’re not wrestling, they’re there, cheering on their teammates, and they’re coaching them. We’ve got a team full of girls that are willing to coach and root for their teammates no matter what. It’s just fun to be there at these tournaments and go watch them wrestle.”
Powell was originally supposed to wrestle Lovell today (Tuesday), but that dual was canceled after an initial rescheduling.
The Panthers are set to host Lander at 5 p.m. on Thursday for senior night, before heading to Greybull on Saturday for a tournament.
“We want to be peaking right now on our conditioning, and then kind of allow the girls to have these weekends to be able to relax before going really hard at it with regional which we host in Powell this year and then off to state,” coach Horsley said. “Ron Thon really showed that these girls are going to be ready to compete.”
