The Powell High School girls’ track and field team posted top results over the weekend. Paige Sanders won the triple jump at the Wyoming Track and Field Classic on Friday in Casper, while Karee Cooley broke the school record in the 1600 meters. The Panthers also finished second as a team in Lovell on Saturday.

Six Panther girls made the trip to Casper for the classic on Friday, a gathering of the top times and distances in every event regardless of classification.

Sanders proved to be the best of the best at Kelly Walsh High School, as she won the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet.

“Paige started finals in last and sealed the competition on her first jump in finals, then followed with two more really good jumps,” coach Scott Smith said.

The next highest Panther placement  came from Cooley, who took fourth overall in the 1600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 13.88 seconds, breaking the record her sister Kinley set a year ago at the same event by approximately five seconds.

“Karee ran a fantastic race against the best in the state to break her sister’s record,” Smith said. “It’s always nice to see great competitors put out their best in a great competition like the classic.”

Kaytlee George earned a sixth place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 58.35 seconds, Nalani Jordan was sixth in the discus with a throw of 124-3 and eighth in the shot put with a throw of 35-6 1/4, Sanders added another sixth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 16-9, Anyston Keller took eighth in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:52.2 and Shelby Zickefoose ran the 1600 meters in a time of 5:32.22 to finish ninth.

As a team the Panthers scored 26 points, sandwiched between a pair of 3A teams as Lander had 32 and Worland had 25 — those were the three highest scoring 3A teams.

Kelly Walsh scored the most points in the girls’ race with 83.

Making the short trip to Lovell on Saturday, the Panthers were led by George who was the only two event winner, taking the 200 meters in 27.25 seconds and the 400 meters in 58.91 seconds.

Kate Williams won the pole vault clearing 8 feet, while Lucy Ostermiller won the triple jump with a leap of 33-8.

The Panthers added two relay wins, as the team of Keller, Lynea Christensen, Kara Sanders and Zickefoose won the 4x800 in 10:30.76 and the 1600 sprint medley team of Paige Sanders, Audrey Johnson, George and Cooley won in 4:21.05.

Additional top five individual Panther finishes included Keller who took second in the 1600 meters (5:37.99); Jordan placed second in the discus (124-5); Ashlee Jacobsen took third in the 100 meter dash (13.35); Keylyn Knuth was third in the high jump (4-9); Averie Warner took fourth in the 100 meters (13.43); Paige Sanders was fourth in the 200 meters (28.05); Sam Edgell took fourth in the shot put (34-9 1/2); Anai Torres placed fourth in the discus (112-9) and fifth in the shot put (34-9); George added a fifth place finish in the long jump (15-5) and Nyah Johnson was fifth in the discus (104-1).

As a team the Panthers had 149.5 points and finished just 7.5 points behind host Lovell but well ahead of Cody in third place with 115.5 points.

The Panthers continue on the road to end the regular season this week, making the trip to Cody for the Trackstravaganza at noon on Thursday with field events and the 4x800 relay. The remaining track events begin at 2 p.m.
