Boys fall short

The Powell Panthers had better weather and tough matches against the rival Cody tennis teams at home on Tuesday afternoon, as the Panther girls defeated the Fillies 3-2 and the Panther boys fell 4-1 against the Broncs.

The two losses for the Panther girls came in the singles positions, as Naomi Whipple fell at No. 1 singles to Brenna Foote 6-4, 6-0, and Bailee Allred fell to Hailey Dansie 6-1, 6-0.

In a similar matchup to Thursday at No. 1 doubles, Isabelle Urbach and Kyra Morrow survived a comeback attempt by Molly Buckles and Isabelle Paddock, holding strong in a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 win.

“They got out there and got a solid first set win,” coach Joe Asay said. “They found themselves a little flat in the second set and Cody made some adjustments. They reset and got out there and got the win. That’s a good win for them.”

At No. 2 doubles the Panthers saw a quicker match from Thursday as Elaina Kousoulos and Emily Jensen defeated Hallie Despain and Kenley Stevens 6-1, 6-2.

Noelle Leighton and Anna David earned a close victory at No. 3 doubles over Abbey Edwards and Bella Beachler, finishing with a 6-4, 7-5 win.

“The third doubles are really settling in there. No different results so that was a good thing with the win there,” Asay said.

On the boys’ side, Nathan Preator fell to Nick Stewart but provided a greater challenge in the second set in a 6-1, 7-5 loss.

“Nate’s always gonna have a battle against Nick. It was good to see him push him there in the second set and figure out a way to have some success out there,” Asay said.

Ryan Barrus again grabbed the only Panther boys’ win, defeating Beau Beachler in a much closer contest 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

“Ryan got out to a good, solid start,” Asay said. “[Beau] took that second set off Ryan and then Ryan settled in. Good to see him finish that one out.”

Calvin Opps and Memphis Solberg showed improvement at No. 1 doubles, coming back from an opening set 6-4 loss against Bryson Laing and Zach Schwab with a 6-4 victory of their own before a 6-0 loss in the third set.

“They just couldn’t keep that momentum going into the third,” Asay said. “They’re right there. Hopefully all of that will come together as we head towards the end of the season.”

At No. 2 doubles, Kazdyn Lee and Isaac Dunsey came up short against Isaac Woods and Wesley Law 6-2, 7-5, and at No. 3 doubles Jonathan Clark and Josh Waite fell against Alex Stewart and Colby Beardall 6-2, 6-1.

Powell finishes up the regular season this Saturday, weather pending, with the Panthers welcoming in the Casper schools.

The Panthers take on Kelly Walsh at 10 a.m. and Natrona County at 2 p.m.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to get out there and compete,” Asay said. “Hopefully we can just keep building from time on the court. We’re just trying to get the kids to not always focus on the bad shots but also know they can hit those good shots. You can have good results from the same shot and focusing on those positives and not the negatives, just go out there and have a swing at it.”

Powell won’t have to travel far for the regional tournament next week, as the Panthers will head to Cody on Friday and Saturday.
