Powell Panther football is set to kick off the summer with a flurry of action, starting with the Panther Pride camp for local youth starting today (Tuesday) and running through Thursday at Powell High School.

That camp will welcome athletes of all ages to play with the Panthers, running through a series of drills while also getting to connect with the high school football players before playing in scrimmages to end the camp.

Over the past several years the Panthers have been holding the camp in August due to construction projects at the high school, but have moved the camp back to the beginning of June to attract more participants.

“We have had to have it in August because of the turf and then because of the track,” coach Chase Kistler said. “Just getting it done at the beginning of the summer, it’s fresh in their minds. Having it at the beginning of the summer will hopefully get it back to normal numbers.”

The camp kicks off bright and early, with kids aged 12-14 participating from 8-10 a.m. and younger participants from ages 8-11 competing from 10:30 a.m. until noon.

Kistler said athletes should bring football cleats and prepare for all types of weather including cold weather in the mornings.

Cost is $60 per athlete, and they can sign up the day of at the camp.

After hosting a camp, Kistler said the Panthers will be heading to Spearfish, South Dakota, to take part in the Black Hills State camp starting June 10.

He said the Panthers currently have 35-36 kids signed up to participate in the camp.
