Panther boys open season sixth

Opening the season at home the Powell Panther boys’ golf team saw a mixed bag of results, with some strong rounds mixed with a number scores in the 90s to help the Panthers finish sixth as a team at the Powell Golf Club Thursday and Friday.

At the top for the Panthers was Cody Fisher, who posted rounds of 75 and 76 to take fourth overall.

“Cody worked hard this summer and he was able to see the results of that right away with this performance,” coach Troy Hildebrand said. “A top four finish in this field is a tremendous accomplishment and will give Cody a lot of confidence to draw on throughout his season. He was very consistent both days and really did a great job of keeping his composure and hanging right in there with some of the top players in the state at any level.”

The second Panther was Park Harvison, who posted a tournament best 78 the first day before battling through adversity on day two to finish with an 87 to tie for 16th.

“Park had a fantastic weekend on two fronts,” Hildebrand said. “Everything was going his way that (first) day and he really rode that momentum to a great round. On day two, he shot a solid 87 but he really had to show some grit and battle that day as he faced some adversity early and that is something that he has really improved from last fall. Friday’s round wasn’t nearly as smooth, and Park showed what we’ll need from him this season by fighting through to keep it under 90.”

Jace Harris,  was third with rounds of 93 and 95 to finish in 39th.

“Jace opened with a solid tournament. He wasn’t able to play as much golf this summer as he would have liked but these two rounds give him a perfect place to identify some areas that he can focus on and he’ll be a player that could easily make the jump into the 80s by the end of the season,” Hildebrand said.

Kason Sherman placed just behind Harris in 40th, posting rounds of 94 and 96 in his first varsity tournament.

“He was very consistent and handled himself and the situation well,” Hildebrand said. “He is a very good athlete that competes in other sports and he really just picked up golf last fall. He has made tremendous improvement in that time and he’ll have some rounds in the 80s before it is all over this year.”

Tucker Muecke finished fifth for the Panthers, posting scores of 94 and 98 to take 42nd overall.

“Tucker is only in his second season of golf but he is a player that really thinks the game and is very analytical about how he plays and understanding what his strengths are as he continues to improve,” Hildebrand said.

The final two golfers for the Panthers were a pair of baseball players, as Ryder Stewart posted rounds of 96 and 101 to take 45th and Abel Teten golfed rounds of 99 and 110 to tie for 49th.

“Ryder is a sophomore in our program that continues to get better all the time. He is growing a lot and that extra strength has helped him this fall,” Hildebrand said. “Abel is coming off of a very successful baseball season with the Pioneers and stepped right onto the golf course. He is a player with a great deal of potential in his golf game and as he gets more rounds under his belt this fall his consistency will definitely keep improving.”

As the Panthers were the host of the tournament they were able to get six players additional playing time with one round each, as Knox Johnson posted a 99, Andrew Shelby and Huston Dearcorn each shot a 112, Trey Schultz and Levi Rogers each shot a 116 and Noah Young shot a 127.

“These six players are either incoming freshmen or sophomores and it is always important to get them some actual tournament rounds early in their career so they know what it is like and some areas that they can quickly improve,” Hildebrand said.

He said Johnson earned a spot to compete in the Lander tournament set for Monday and today (Tuesday).

At the top of the leaderboard in Powell it was all Campbell County, as Jaxon Burr shot a pair of 71s to finish two-under over both days, and the Camels added the team title by 44 strokes with a total of 590 including a three-under day two as a team.

Powell finished with a score of 694, six strokes behind Buffalo and 48 behind Lander, which was the highest placing 3A team with a 646.

The Panthers didn’t have much time to dwell on their home tournament, as they hit the road Monday and today (Tuesday) to take part in the Lander Invite.

Powell then will have a week to practice before taking part in the Worland Invitational on Aug. 28-29.
