Dear editor:
My wife and I decided to organize a cleanup of trash in and along the Garland Canal this past Saturday.
Just the section running through town. Road 8-Road 10 (now known as Panther Boulevard-Tower Boulevard). My original thought was to call this PIG Pickup (Powell’s Irrigation Garbage-Pickup) to catch the reader's attention. We posted on Facebook and thanks to Toby at the Tribune, a picture and story was published.
As we sweated and struggled to complete this task, it dawned on me! I was working on this very canal bank 42 years ago planting trees with the city’s Parks Department. NOT as a volunteer, but as a young adult needing to pay off a fine because I didn't have the funds to pay. Both times it was called Community Service!
Sincerely,
Gary Patterson
