John O. Gibson, 95, of Powell, passed away on Nov. 22, 2025. He was born Dec. 18, 1929, at the family home in Mt. Erie, Illinois, to Harry and Lucy Gibson. He was the youngest of two children and shared a special bond with his sister, Dorothy.
He attended Powell High School, where he met the love of his life, Beverly Keller. John and Bev married, raised four children, and shared 70 years of marriage.
John moved to Powell with his parents in 1944. The day after arriving, he began working at the Conoco Station on Main Street, beginning a lifelong pattern of hard work. He worked 41 years for Montana Dakota Utilities, working in Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. No matter where his career took him, returning to Powell was always his retirement goal.
In retirement, John and Bev spent summers as campground hosts in several states and winters in Arizona, where John enjoyed volunteering, carving wooden treasures for his family, and reading old western novels. He was grateful for the many friendships made throughout his career and travels.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly; daughter, Connie; sister, Dorothy; and his in-laws Wes Hedrick, Jerry Keller, Ron and Mary Keller, and Ben Keller.
He is survived by his children John “Jack” (Peggy) Gibson, Stewart Gibson and Toni (Ray) Cartwright; sister-in-law Joyce Keller; 12 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
