Indoor track hits halfway mark

Getting back on the track in Gillette the Powell High School track and field team saw improvements across the board, as school records fell again for the third straight meet.

“We had a great meet. Over 80% of the performances were either personal records or season bests,” coach Scott Smith said.

Those records came in the same events as the meet prior, as Paige Sanders broke her triple jump record for a third consecutive meet, finishing second with a leap of 35 feet, 8 1/2 inches.

Sanders was also part of the 4x200 relay team, as she, Ashlee Jacobsen, Audrey Johnson and Kaytlee George broke their own school record for a second consecutive meet with a time of 1 minute, 53.23 seconds to take eighth.

That time was an automatic qualifying time for the state meet in March.

Smith added that the boys’ 4x200 team of Breckyn Kobbe, Brayden Benander, Tanner Seifert and Lincoln Crawford was .04 seconds off an additional school record with a time of 1:39.51 to take eighth.

Additional top eight individual finishes came in the distance races, as Karee Cooley took sixth in the 800 meters (2:30.44) and Anyston Keller was eighth in the 1600 meters (5:40.63).

The girls’ 1600 sprint medley team of Jacobsen, Sanders, Johnson and Cooley earned a state qualifying time of 4:37.35 in a seventh place finish.

Overall the Panther girls finished 12th as a team with 15 points, fourth among a group of 3A teams as Cody was the top 3A team in seventh with 40.5 points. Thunder Basin took the overall girls’ title, scoring a 60.5 point victory over second place with a total of 146 points.

The 4x200 relay alongside the 1600 sprint medley team of Cobey Khan, Benander, Alex Werner and Korbyn Warren took seventh as the other points scorers for the Panther boys with a time of 3:57.05.

The Powell boys finished 17th with three points, as Cody was the highest 3A team with 44 points. The Sheridan boys took the team title by 37.5 points with 127.

Smith said the Panthers saw significant improvements in the sprints, as at least four runners improved by .1 seconds in the 55 meter dash as well as big PRs in the 200 meters.

Powell heads back to Gillette this weekend, taking part in the Bronc Invitational on Saturday.

“This week we are still emphasizing speed conditioning on the track, then we’ll start backing off the next couple weeks a bit and start focusing more on technical aspects of the different events,” Smith said.
