Hello, my name is Emma Johnson, and as you’ve probably deduced, I am the latest intern at the Powell Tribune. In my highly decorated position at the bottom of the food chain, I have found that in the last few weeks, this is an opportunity that I am thrilled to be a part of. Journalism is not just something I am passionate about, it is a facet of my life that I hope to fulfill in my college pursuits.
I am a senior at Powell High School and plan to major in psychology or political science and minor in journalism. In the last four years of my academic career, I have been involved in a plethora of activities offered at PHS and the local area. Each one is close to my heart in commitment and passion, whether it is serving as student body co-president, serving in the National Honor Society, researching topics as platform captain through the Speech & Debate club, or editing stories as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper The Prowl. I believe that is through these activities that it has molded me to be the person and journalist I am today.
As an aspiring journalist, I have found that one of the key components of achieving “success” in the newsroom is to accurately capture the truth and present it in a format that makes it accessible to all of the public. In following the philosophy of the SPJ Code of Ethics, “be[ing] accountable and transparent” is one of the guiding principles I strive to abide by, and certainly hope to foster within my internship.
Without a doubt, I am beyond excited to be involved with the Tribune, and I am looking forward to capturing the authenticity of Powell with my camera and words in the next couple of months.
