Girls roll into final game

The Powell High School girls’ soccer team continued to roll on the road to wrap up the regular season, defeating Mountain View 7-0 on Friday and Lyman 9-0 on Saturday.

POWELL 7, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0

Starting off Friday the Panthers (12-1 overall, 8-1 3A West) got off to a strong start against the Buffalos (4-5 overall, 3-5 3A West).

That start came behind a flurry of top quality goals, as Emery Hernandez, Ivy Agee and Jesi Agee combined for four goals early.

“Mountain View can be a tough place to play well so it was great to see us come out strong,” coach Danny Agee said. “The first four goals were legit top corner strikes that happened quickly. That early lead helped the team settle in and they maintained possession most of the game.”

Once the Panthers settled in the lead only continued to grow, as they pulled away quickly for the decisive victory as Mady Agee added a hat-trick to account for the final three goals in the 7-0 win.

POWELL 9, LYMAN 0

Continuing on to Lyman on Saturday the Panthers were again looking for the season sweep of the Eagles (1-8 overall, 1-7 3A West).

Despite controlling possession it took the Panthers some time to get on the board against the hosts.

Jesi finally got the Panthers on the board, firing home a rebound off a saved long shot with just under 11 minutes left in the half.

She added a second six minutes later, putting home a shot from just outside the box to make it 2-0.

Powell couldn’t find a third before the break, and led 2-0 at the break.

Hernandez added to the lead just over three minutes into the second half, as she headed home a corner to make it 3-0.

The Panthers continued adding to the lead just a minute later, as the lead quickly swelled in the second half.

Ava Gilliatt added another with 27:30 left in the game to make it 5-0.

Not even 30 seconds later, Gilliatt and a pair of Lyman defenders battled in the box, as a Lyman defender deflected the ball into the net to make it six.

Aspen French fired home another, and Powell led 7-0 just before the midway point.

Mady scored on a putback with just over six minutes left and Hernandez capped off the scoring with two minutes left to make it 9-0.

“Having a top two spot in the league secured is great as it sets us up for a decent first game at state,” coach Agee said. “It will be nice to be able to get our legs under us somewhat without a major battle. That will help with the tough three game schedule.”

FINAL HOME GAME

Powell returns home this week, hosting its final game of the season against the rival Cody Fillies (12-0 overall, 9-0 3A West) at 4 p.m. Friday.

Cody is the only team to defeat Powell, in a 3-2 game in Cody in April.

If Powell wins in regulation by two or more goals it will secure the No. 1 seed heading into the state tournament, as Cody has conceded five goals and Powell has conceded six, which would be the first tiebreaker required to separate the two teams.

“We just need to be sure to capitalize on our chances rather than allowing them to stay in the game,” coach Agee said. “We are looking at shaking things up a little too to try and create some different imbalances we can exploit.”
