After two weeks of games  the Powell High School junior varsity basketball team finished with a 2-2 record, losing to Lovell 45-21 and Buffalo 34-32 on Jan. 29-30, defeating Mountain View 32-12 and Lyman 31-21 on Feb. 6-7, before losing to the Burlington varsity squad 58-32 on Tuesday night.

In Lovell the Panthers fell behind 19-11 at halftime, before Lovell scored 15 unanswered in the third quarter to go up 34-11 before the 45-21 victory.

Sam Edgell led the Panthers with eight points, Autumn Kidd added seven, while Aspen Fench, Breiyah Bonander, and Addie Gillett each added two.

Against Buffalo at home the Panthers had a back-and-forth matchup, leading 14-13 at the half and 22-20 after three quarters.

Turnovers late after taking a five point lead with three minutes left set up a thrilling finish, as the Bison hit a buzzer beater to take the 34-32 win in dramatic fashion.

“This was a game that we will really be able to use as a learning experience for the future as we struggled at the free throw line and taking care of the ball in crunch time and that allowed the momentum to swing in their favor for that final stretch,” coach Troy Hildebrand said.

Edgell led with 10 points, French added eight, Bonander had six, Stella Shoopman had four while Kidd and Charlie Eastman had two each.

At home against Mountain View the Panthers started off slow, trailing 6-2 in the first before eventually finding an offensive rhythm and leading 18-10 at halftime.

Powell pulled away in the second half, and held the visitors scoreless until the final 20 seconds for the 32-12 win.

Edgell led with 11 points, French added nine, Bonander and Kidd had four each while Shoopman and Eastman each had two.

The Panthers started better on Saturday with an 11-4 first quarter.

After a difficult second quarter Powell led 13-11 at the break, before a 16-5 third quarter helped Powell pull away in the second half for a 31-21 win.

French led with 11 points, Edgell and Ava Teten had nine each while Kidd had two points.

Heading down to Burlington on Tuesday the Panthers got a good test against a strong 1A Husky team.

“This was a very good test for this group as Burlington is a very good team and they have great size this year,” Hildebrand said.

The game was close early on as Powell trailed 16-10 after the first quarter, and continued to trail 26-13 at the break.

Powell found some success in the third and cut the lead to 37-25 heading into the fourth, before the Huskies ran away with the 58-32 win, ending on a 21-7 run.

“That final quarter we just didn’t get much going on offense and they really used their size and depth to steadily pull away for the final margin,” Hildebrand said. “This is always a valuable game for the JV group as it allows us to see a quality varsity team and identify more of the areas that we need to improve in as a team and individually.”

Edgell and French led with 11 points each, Gillett had four, Jordyn Nelson scored three and Bonander added two.

The Powell JV teams host Worland at 4 p.m. on Friday.
