The Powell Middle School girls’ track and field teams both won conference titles with dominant performances on Saturday, as the eighth grade girls’ team won the Yellowstone Conference meet in Worland by 62 points and the seventh grade girls’ team won its title by 49 points.
“These athletes have worked tirelessly all season. Seeing the hard work pay off in such a big way was deeply rewarding, not just for them but for our coaching staff and the entire school community,” coach Amanda Haney said. “It is about more than just winning, it is about the journey, the growth and the grit these kids showed. They have earned every bit of this and we could not be prouder.”
Four individual wins and three relay wins helped pace the eighth grade girls to the title, with one competitor, Kara Sanders, taking the top spot in two events.
She won the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 37.03 seconds, while also winning the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 5 inches.
Lynea Christensen took the top spot in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.95, and Anyston Keller was the final victor taking first place in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:39.63.
