Cub girls sweep two meets

Host invitational next weekend

Two vastly different meets garnered the same results for the Powell Middle School girls’ track and field teams, as the Cubs performed strong in Laurel, Montana, and Shoshoni, earning plenty of top placements at both meets.

LAUREL INVITE

At the Laurel Invite on Thursday the seventh grade Cubs finished first in several events.

Maci MaGill was a two-event winner, taking the top spot in the 200 meters in 29.52 seconds and the 400 meters in 1:06.13.

Autumn Kleinfeldt was the other Cub to take a top mark, winning the triple jump with a leap of 29 feet.

The seventh grade Cubs also won the 4x100 relay, as the team of Kimber Allan, Kleinfeldt, Ryleigh Hutzenbieler and MaGill won with a time of 57.17.

Powell also got a number of top three finishes as Kleinfeldt placed second in the pole vault (6-0) and third in the 100 meter dash (14.54); Finley Franklin placed second in the 200 meter hurdles (34.86) and third in the pole vault (6-0); Teagan Gillett took second in the triple jump (28-3) and Addi Fetter took third in the 100 meter hurdles (18.45).

The eighth grade girls had one individual winner in Laurel, as Anyston Keller took the top spot in the 1600 meters (5:54.41).

The 4x100 relay team of Anh Trinh, Keylyn Knuth, Addie Gillett and Lucy Ostermiller earned the win with a time of 55 seconds.

The Cubs’ top three eighth grade finishes included Darby McKee, who took second in the 200 hurdles (33.83); Kara Sanders, who took second in the triple jump (29-11) and Kaytlee George, who took third in the 200 meters (29.43).

SHOSHONI INVITE

After the Laurel Invite the Cubs made their way down to Shoshoni to take part in another invitational on Saturday.

In Shoshoni the Cubs faced new challenges, as the meet ran with the seventh and eighth grade divisions combined.

Despite both grades running together the Cubs put on just as dominant a performance.

MaGill took the top spot in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.75 and Knuth took the top spot in the high jump clearing 4-4 as the two victors for Powell.

The Cubs added a number of top three finishes, as Keller took second in the 1600 meters (5:43.93); Franklin took second in the high jump (4-4); Sanders took second in the triple jump (29-10) and third in the 400 meters (1:09.2) and Knuth took third in the triple jump (28-11 1/2).

Overall the Cubs finished with 117 points to take the team title, rising to the challenge of a combined meet to win by 33 points over second placed Cody.

“The girls really proved just how strong they are across both grades in Shoshoni,” coach Amanda Haney said. “With the races combined, it could have been easy for some of them to get lost in the mix but instead they rose to the challenge and dominated. Running away with the team title in that kind of format shows not just talent, but depth, confidence and a great team mindset. It’s clear they are not just strong individually, but they’re building something special together.”

Haney said that it has been a frustrating experience this season trying to get accurate results for the athletes from schools, and that results available online this week, particularly from Laurel, may not be entirely accurate.

Following those two meets the Cubs will take this next week to prepare for their home meet on Saturday, April 26, at Powell High School.
