Impressive performances in Casper

Competition brought out the best in the Powell High School boys’ track and field team, as the Panthers brought back three medals from the Wyoming Track and Field Classic Friday in Casper and won the Lovell Invitational on Saturday by more than 50 points and adding new qualifying marks.

The Panthers took three competitors to Kelly Walsh High School on Friday. This meet pits the best of the best from around Wyoming against each other regardless of classification.

Powell’s highest placer was Braxton Nelson in the long jump, as he took second with a leap of 21 feet, 9 1/2 inches.

Sawyer Wormald added a pair of third place finishes in the hurdles, as he finished the 110 meter hurdles in 15.46 seconds and the 300 meter hurdles in 39.37 seconds.

Korbyn Warren was the final Panther competitor, as he took 10th with a time of 10:15.79 in the 3200 meters.

“I was really proud of the boys with how they competed,” coach Scott Smith said. “Like the Olympics, they only give medals to the top three, and they all either brought back medals or personal records. I was very impressed with how all nine of the kids (boys and girls) competed.”

As a team the Panther boys had 20 points, tying with Thunder Basin and Riverton for 10th.

Lovell was the highest 3A team in fourth with 44 points, as Sheridan dominated the competition with 96 points, 50 ahead of second place.

Making the trip to Lovell on Saturday paid off for the Panthers, as they won three individual events and two relays.

Nelson took the top spot in the 200 meters in 22.61 seconds and the high jump clearing 6-5 while Brayden Benander won the 400 meters in 53.15 seconds.

The relays the Panthers won were the 4x800 relay with the team of Alex Werner, Michael Stensing, Colin Walker and Warren taking the top spot in 8:51.48 and the 1600 sprint medley relay team of Tanner Seifert, Karcher Foley, Wormald and Warren winning in 3:43.32.

The 4x800 relay was a new qualification for the Panthers, as Warren also added the 1600 meters (4:39.15) to his qualification list with a second place finish and a brand new qualifier in Harper Havron placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 23.6.

“The Lovell meet was a big meet for us as we now have all relay teams with automatically qualified teams and many of them with multiple versions that give us a lot of flexibility to put our kids in the best position to bring home medals at regionals and state,” Smith said.

Additional top five individual Panther finishes included Nelson who took second in the 100 meter dash (11.3); David Stearns took second in the 200 meters (23.04) and fifth in the 100 meters (11.7); Dayton Lawrence tied for second in the pole vault (11-6); Brady Harvey was second in the triple jump (39-2 3/4); Nathan Varian took third in the 1600 meters (5:04.15); Walker took third in the 3200 meters (10:44.47); Lincoln Crawford was third in the 300 meter hurdles (43.5); Havron placed fourth in the 100 meters (11.69); Tristin Winninger was fourth in the 400 meters (57); Stensing placed fourth in the 1600 meters (5:14.28); Foley was fifth in the 200 meters (23.31); Thomas Shuman placed fifth in the 400 meters (58.42); Renzy Matthews was fifth in the 300 meter hurdles (47.4) and Landon McDonald placed fifth in the pole vault (11).

As a team the Panthers claimed the top spot with 172.5 points, 51 ahead of host Lovell which was second.

Powell heads back on the road to Cody to end the regular season on Thursday for the Trackstravaganza at noon. Field events and the 4x800 relay start at noon before the remainder of track events start at 2 p.m.

Smith is hopeful the Panthers will continue to compete well in the final meet of the regular season before heading further on the road for the remainder of the postseason.

“We are still seeing a lot of PR’s or competing with better consistency which is what we always ask for. I think we are progressing well towards regionals and state,” Smith said.
