The Powell Panther boys’ track and field team finished sixth in the warm weather and competitive atmosphere of the 3A West Regional meet at home Friday and Saturday, adding new qualifiers for this week’s state meet in Casper.
Powell didn’t get any individual victories at the meet, but the Panthers 1600 sprint medley relay did claim the top spot.
The quartet of Breckyn Kobbe, Karcher Foley, Sawyer Wormald and Liam Taylor won with a new regional record of 3 minutes, 39.98 seconds, breaking the record set two years ago by Mountain View by just over two seconds.
The highest placement individually for the Panthers came from Brady Harvey, who took second in the discus and hit the automatic qualifying standard for state with a throw of 139 feet, 2 inches.
“Brady is peaking at just the right time and it was great to see him throw so well this week,” coach Scott Smith said. “His hard work was well rewarded.”
Additional top five Panther finishes included Lincoln Crawford, who placed fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.78); Wormald took fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (40.86) and fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (17.07) while Braxton Nelson took fifth in the long jump (20-3).
Alongside those top finishes the Panthers also added a number of new qualifying marks for the state meet, as Korbyn Warren took seventh and qualified in the 1600 meters (4:47.03) and also placed eighth in the 3200 meters (10:29.8); Foley placed 10th in the 200 meter prelims but ran a qualifying time of 23.46, as Nelson placed 12th and did the same in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.59 seconds.
“It’s always good to get our young kids a chance to compete at state and our boys really did a nice job of stepping up and earning quite a few additional spots,” Smith said.
Overall the Panthers finished sixth as a team with 55.5 points, well behind fifth placed Worland which had 84 as Lovell won the team title with 163.5 points.
“We got a lot of compliments on how well the meet ran and that comes down to the fantastic volunteers we had working the meet,” Smith said. “My hat is off to the great work that they all did.”
STATE MEET
The Panthers now head out on the road, making the trip to Casper to take part in the state meet starting on Thursday.
Powell has 14 individual qualifying marks as well as three relays heading to Casper.
“We plan on going to Casper and watching our kids compete as well as they did this week, continue to show improvement and bring home lots of individual medals,” Smith said.
Action in Casper starts at 2 p.m. on Thursday with the 3200 meter run and field events, concluding on Saturday with the 4x400 relay in the early afternoon.
