Heading further down the road for their second meet of the season the Powell Middle School boys’ track and field teams posted strong results at the Spartan Invite in Riverton on Saturday.
The eighth grade boys returned to action in Riverton, with one individual winner as Justin Marquez won the shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 5 inches.
In addition to the one individual winner the Cubs got a relay win in the 4x400, as the team of Kooper Arends, Wyatt Hill, Karson Howe and Mason Cheatham won with a time of 4 minutes, 35.96 seconds.
Despite only the two wins, the Cubs got a number of top three finishes throughout the invitational.
Harper Havron placed second in the 200 meters (12.45) and third in the 100 meter dash (12.45); Hill took second in the 800 meters (2:34.93); Karzten Carter took second in the high jump (5-0) and third in the 200 meter hurdles (31.52); Russell Goolsbey was third in the 400 meters (1:01.86) and Arends took third in the 1600 meters (6:09.24).
To date the eighth grade boys have four athletes who have qualified for the Best of the Best meet at the end of the season, as Carter has qualified in the 100 meter hurdles and the high jump; Havron has qualified for the 100 and 200 meter races; Cheatham has qualified in the pole vault and Marquez has qualified for the shot put.
The seventh grade boys also posted one victor in Riverton, as Carter Gambill won the high jump clearing 5 feet.
The Cubs also had one relay win, taking the top spot in the 4x400 with the quartet of Auzzy Carter, Bret Clausen, Ryder Tomash and Xander Whitlock with a time of 4:59.92.
Top three finishes for the seventh graders came with Zaiden Powell, who finished second in the 400 meters (1:02.96); Rhett Goolsbey took second in the triple jump (29-3); Carter took third in the 400 meters (1:05.49) and Kendall Matthews placed third in the 800 meters (2:39.52).
There were no scores kept at the Spartan Invite.
Qualifiers for the seventh grade boys for the Best of the Best are Gambill in the high jump and 400; Tucker McDonald in the 100 meter hurdles and the pole vault; Rhett Goolsbey in the triple jump and Carter and Powell in the 400 meters.
The Cubs will head back on the road this week, starting with a trip to Laurel today (Thursday).
“This will be a good meet for us to see different competition,” coach Amanda Haney said.
Powell travels again Saturday to take part in a meet in Shoshoni, before taking next week off to prepare for their home invitational at Powell High School on Saturday, April 26.
Haney said that the Cubs are not expected to be at full strength in either meet this week, giving kids new opportunities to step into different roles while growing throughout the season.
“It’s a great opportunity for some of our kids to step up and try something new,” Haney said. “We are focusing on being flexible, staying competitive and continuing to grow as a team. It’ll be fun to see how they respond.”
