Amidst fast times and close team scores, the Powell High School boys’ track and field team finished third at the 3A West Regionals in Pinedale on Friday and Saturday.
No individual winners were crowned for the Panther boys, but a number of second place finishes helped pace the team.
Korbyn Warren placed second in the 3200 meters with a time of 10 minutes, 44.57 seconds, Sawyer Wormald took second place in both the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles in 15.53 and 39.7 seconds respectively, and Braxton Nelson took second place in the long jump and triple jump with leaps of 20 feet, 11-3/4 inches, and 46 feet, 7-3/4 inches, respectively.
Nelson added two more third place finishes, as he was third in the 200 meters (22.86) and high jump clearing 6-3.
New Panther qualifiers included Breckyn Kobbe who reached a prequalifying time in the 100 meter dash with an 11.53 despite finishing 10th, Tanner Seifert placed fifth in the 400 meters with a 51.49, Colin Walker placed seventh in the 3200 meters (10:56.14) and Brady Harvey qualified in the discus taking sixth with a throw of 133-6.
“In the 100, getting Breckyn and Cobey (Khan) in by automatic qualifier times could be big as their times were about 1/10th of a second from fifth at regionals and into the top eight overall at state so they could still place at state easily,” coach Scott Smith said. “Tanner is really coming on after getting over an injury at state indoor and is going to make a lot of noise at state as well as we got our relays in great positions.”
Additional top eight finishes included Lincoln Crawford who placed fourth in the 100 meter dash (11.51) and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles (42.07); Warren took fourth in the 1600 meters (4:47.63); Dayton Lawrence placed fourth in the pole vault (12-6); David Stearns was fifth in the 100 meter dash (11.53) and seventh in the 200 meters (23.8); Karcher Foley took fifth in the 200 meters (23.44); Brayden Benander took seventh in the 400 meters (52.36) and Harper Havron took eighth in the 200 meters (24.09).
As a team the Panthers took third with 119 points, as Cody took the team title with 147, 20 ahead of Lovell in second.
With a number of athletes qualified in different races, Smith said they will examine what they think will be the best course for entries at the state meet, focusing on medals rather than the team race.
“We look at the data and sometimes we go with gut feelings on where to enter kids to put them in the positions to be most successful,” Smith said. “Then we ask them to focus on what will make them perform their best and forget about the distraction of the team race, collect the most medals they can and see how it all shakes out at the end.”
The Panthers head to the State Track and Field Championships this week in Casper hoping to make some noise; the meet begins Thursday at 2 p.m. with the 3200 meters and several field events.
Events on Friday and Saturday begin at 9 a.m. and conclude with the 4x400 relay on Saturday at 3:50 p.m. as Smith hopes the forecasted weather holds and the Panthers can finish with a number of personal records this week.
“I am really hoping to see a lot of PR’s this week and a couple more school records falling if the weather forecast holds true,” Smith said. “Our kids have had a chance to compete in all sorts of weather this season, so I think they will be prepared for anything.”
