Be a courteous driver in town

Dear editor:

I agree with a writer, Jake DeWilde in the Cody Enterprise, on courtesy driving.

It seems that most drivers coming into and going through Powell on Coulter Avenue/U.S. Highway 14A are impeding the traffic of drivers wanting to enter onto Coulter from the parking lots of the businesses on the north side of the highway by using both lanes as they come into Powell from the west and the east, making it difficult for opposing traffic.

There are no posted courtesy signs on the rules and regulations on driving because there are common known courtesy rules for every driver to know and remember. Some of the unwritten rules, being that the left lane is the passing lane and drivers should adhere to that rule. Leaving space for merging traffic is also a courteous gesture among drivers, therefore leaving the left lane for passing and merging traflic would be a courtesy to all drivers on the road.

If drivers adhere to the left lane except when passing slower traffic and coming upon your left exit turn and merging into the lane for that exit, or coming into town from the east side of Powell and adhere to the right lane for traffic merging onto the highway from the north roads and parking lots, it only makes sense for all drivers on the highways and byways to use common courtesy making it safe and also fun during leisurely driving. As Jake said, “it is a privilege driving.”

Thank you to all courtesy drivers for being considerate and using your blinkers, sharing all roads, highways and driving on the perspective lanes coming into town from either direction creating a safe and respectful driving environment for all. Our town is growing as well as all other communities around us and with the locals, cyclists, vacationers, laborers, travelers and families taxiing their kids around, roads are getting busy. Especially at the hour of quitting time which makes the roads congested at that certain hour of the day. Please share pass this on.

I’m hoping the town of Powell is considering the traffic conditions, and hoping we can get traffic signals on Coulter at Albertsons and at Homesteader Park at the intersection where parents are crossing and entering that road to the Powell High School on the north side of Homesteader.

A lot of people may be thinking and hoping the same thing.

Thanks everyone.
