Alan D Nielson, 59, passed away Jan. 20, 2026, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Alan was the youngest of four children, born on Sept. 23, 1966, in Richfield, Utah, to Dorius J. Nielson and Colleen Mickelsen Nielson. Alan was a responsible youth, obtaining his first job at Sandy’s Drive-In at the early age of 14. In addition to studies at Richfield High School, he was employed at The Richfield Reaper. Following high school graduation Alan attended Utah State University graduating with a mechanical engineering degree. Alan’s career as an engineer began in Idaho at the Idaho National Laboratory. His time in Idaho was short lived as he took a position with Questar Pipeline Company in Salt Lake City to be closer to family. The gas and oil industry took him to other locations such as Montana, Doha (Qatar), Canada, Wyoming and Alaska where he was employed by Conoco Phillips (recently retired).
While working in Salt Lake City Alan met and married Cody Moncur, later divorced. He was father to two children, Cameron and Courtney. His two granddaughters are Nova June and Maeve Lynn Patterson.
Alan was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was hard working with lofty expectations of himself. His heart was kind and he was mindful of the opinions and feelings of others. He was quiet with an insightful intellect. He was supportive of family through “thick and thin.”
Alan enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors and loved biking and hiking, especially in the red hills around his hometown. His love of the outdoors began early as a child as he accompanied his older brother on expeditions into the local mountains. Wherever life took him, he carried with him his love of nature. Later in life he especially enjoyed fishing with his son in the wilds of Alaska. Alan’s sudden passing leaves an unfillable void. He will be greatly missed.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents and sister Teresa (deceased in 1981).
He is survived by his children and grandchildren as well as brother Kurt (Kathi) Nielson of Conroe, Texas and sister Jan (Michael) Lindholm in Gilbert, Arizona.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
