Keeping up with Katie

A note from your new columnist

When being offered the opportunity to take a break from writing English papers, or dissecting history books to write my own published column in the Powell Tribune, I was ecstatic. At the very young age of 16, to have my own published work is something unspeakable.

I am Katie Morrison, a current junior at Powell High School. As a rare high-school-aged columnist at the Tribune, it is extra important that I make my memorable mark on the paper. Not only in ink, but also in the minds of my many readers.

I have had a great start to my journalism career. I began my time on the Powell High School newspaper, The Prowl, in the middle of my sophomore year. From there I quickly picked up on the style of journalistic writing and have come to love this form of writing very dearly. I was then promoted to be the opinion column editor where I currently write and edit. That is, until just a couple of days ago when I was promoted to the associate editor position. I am very excited to be given this opportunity within the Prowl, but I also can’t wait to see where journalistic writing takes me.

I take part in a plethora of opportunities that Powell, Wyoming, has to offer. I love to help the community by doing various acts of community service. While plenty of young people don't take interest in tasks such as helping the community, I find great pride in helping others. It has given me the opportunity to shed new light on parts of this small town many might not see.

But what is rather fitting about being offered the opportunity to write an opinion piece for the Tribune is that I am a rather … well … opinionated person. At a very young age, I picked up my opinionated nature. I since have taken that and have run with it. I am seen to be a very colorful person because of my opinionated nature. I delve into fashion and books and can't help but love bright colors. Fashion is one of my greatest interests, and I embrace it in my everyday life.

I want to illuminate new ideas on Powell through my writing. I want to ponder new concepts, argue different topics, and implement a younger perspective within our town. I can’t wait to share my opinions to you all, and I hope to make your day brighter with each and every piece I write.
