CODY — The Shoshone National Forest is set to start work to repair the Morrison Jeep Trail, National Forest System Roads (NFSR) 119 and 120, in Clarks Fork Canyon north of Cody. This will be a multi-phased project lasting most of the summer and is a coordinated effort between the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Wyoming State Trails, according to a release.
The Morrison Jeep Trail was damaged during the severe flooding that affected the area in 2022 and the lower section, NFSR 119, has been closed since then. With help from disaster relief funds and amazing partnerships this area will be returned to the destination for the community that it once was.
Throughout the summer area users can expect the lower trail, NFSR 119, to be closed Monday through Thursday, allowing access to fishing areas on the weekends. NFSR 120 will be closed to the public from the intersection of NFSR 119 to the gate on Upper Dilworth Bench throughout the project as there will be heavy equipment staged blocking the path. Those who have seen the damage left behind from 2022 will understand that a significant amount of blasting will be required to return the switchbacks to a usable state. During periods where explosives are in use, there will be an area closure in place to protect the public and employees alike.
Crews will begin to mobilize equipment into the area starting May 26 and the road and trail closures will begin at that time. Any updates to the plan, timing, or closures will be shared on the Shoshone National Forest Facebook page (facebook.com/ShoshoneNationalForestOfficial) as well as posted on the alerts tab at the top of the website (fs.usda.gov/r02/shoshone).
