Women’s Health and Nursery receives first milk donation

Posted

CODY — Cody Regional Health’s Women’s Health and Nursery has received its first milk donation, not long after opening its new donation center.

According to a hospital press release, Amelia Rothleutner brought in over 500 ounces of life-saving breast milk during her visit to the Milk Depot. Since becoming a milk donor, Rothleutner has donated over 3,000 ounces of breast milk in total. To put that into perspective, 500 ounces of milk alone can provide vital nourishment for many premature babies, giving them a fighting chance at life.

Rothleutner decided to become a milk donor after realizing she had an abundance of breast milk she could no longer use. She went through the qualification process with Mothers’ Milk Bank and was excited to contribute to this life-changing cause. The milk donated by Rothleutner will be transported to Colorado for pasteurization, testing and distribution to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and other health care facilities where breast milk is crucial for babies' survival.

“We are incredibly grateful to Amelia for her generosity and commitment to helping other families,” said Vicki Sarver, Women’s Health and Nursery director at Cody Regional Health. “Her donation represents the first step in what we hope will be an ongoing effort to provide this invaluable resource to infants in need.”

The Milk Depot at Cody Regional Health, established in partnership with Mothers’ Milk Bank, serves as a local drop-off site for approved milk donors. Donor milk is essential for premature infants, babies with weakened immune systems, and those with special dietary needs. It’s also critical in cases of adoption, surrogacy and multiples.

Cody Regional Health is actively seeking more milk donors to ensure every baby in need has access to the vital nutrients and immune protection only human milk can provide.

In the coming months, Cody Regional Health's Women’s Health and Nursery hopes to become a recipient site, making donor milk available to families directly from the Cody location.
