Woman placed on probation for stealing from employer

A woman paid full restitution and is currently serving probation after stealing nearly $2,000 from her employer last year.

Angel L. Burt pleaded guilty to a felony count of theft in March. Shortly after her sentencing hearing, Burt repaid the $1,936.74 she stole from Blair’s Market, along with $200 in court fees and assessments.

A Powell police report says the 25-year-old stole the money in September and October through a scheme that involved using and reusing receipts from the store’s coin machine to obtain cash.

When confronted, Burt reportedly admitted to the thefts, explaining that she’d “been having a hard time paying bills and needed the extra money.” She had $175 in cash and $16.07 in coins in her wallet at the time of her Oct. 12 arrest.

Burt served 17 days in jail before making bail and relocating to Montana, court records indicate.

At a March 9 hearing, Park County District Court Judge Bill Simpson accepted a plea deal for Burt, suspending a two- to three-year prison sentence in favor of two years of unsupervised probation.

If she returns to Wyoming for more than 24 hours, “the unsupervised probation shall immediately convert to supervised probation,” Simpson wrote in his sentencing order.

At the time of the thefts from Blair’s, court records indicate Burt was already serving unsupervised probation for stealing $300 from a previous employer, Powell’s Family Dollar store, in 2021.
