A person is dead and a Yellowstone National Park ranger injured following a Thursday shootout at Canyon Village.
Rangers were initially called to the area on Wednesday night for a report that a person was armed and making threats.
“When rangers contacted the individual there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers,” park officials said in a release.
While the release offered no details about the encounter, it said the incident ended Thursday morning with the subject dead and a ranger hospitalized in stable condition.
An area in the vicinity of Canyon Lodge remained closed on Thursday while authorities continued to investigate the incident, but park officials said there were no active threats to the public. Photos published by NPS Ranger News showed armed officers entering a dormitory used by concessionaire employees in the wake of the incident.
The Park Service said in its release that, “details around this incident are under investigation.”
