The body of an older Cody woman was found in Beck Lake on Monday morning, April 6. All evidence indicates that the woman died by suicide, the Park County Sheriff’s Office said in a Thursday afternoon news release.
The deceased was identified as Vesta Silva, who was 72 years old.
A trooper with the Wyoming Highway Patrol had spotted the body along the lake’s shore around 6 a.m. Monday. That was after he’d stopped to check on Silva’s car, which had been left unoccupied on the shoulder of the nearby Greybull Highway (U.S. Highway 14/16/20E).
“We ask that you please keep the family in your thoughts during this difficult time,” Sheriff Darrell Steward wrote in the release.
Steward added a reminder that, “if you or a loved one is having thoughts of suicide, please reach out to talk to someone.”
In Wyoming, anyone can call 988 at any time to speak to a licensed mental health worker — or they can also call 911 for assistance.
“We are always ready to help anyone in crisis during a time of need,” Steward said.
Silva is the second person to die in Beck Lake this year. In late January, 50-year-old Cody resident David Kelsey perished in the lake amid freezing temperatures. Kelsey had both physical and mental health issues and Park County Coroner Cody Gortmaker said his death appeared to be an accidental drowning.
