Woman alleged to have battered, stabbed boyfriend

A woman is alleged to have attacked her boyfriend with an iPad and a knife on an early morning in Cody last week.

Joy E. Haskell, 44, is facing a felony count of aggravated assault and battery and misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and interference with a peace officer in connection with the Oct. 12 incident.

As of Monday, Haskell remained in the Park County Detention Center, with bail set at $50,000 cash.

Her boyfriend called Cody police around 1:45 a.m. on Oct. 12 and reported he was being attacked, police logs show.

Responding Cody Police Officer Daniel Villalobos said he found Haskell “aggressively knocking on the door and side” of the trailer where the couple was living. She ran away when she saw police and then resisted their efforts to arrest her, Villalobos wrote in affidavit.

Haskell’s boyfriend reported she’d returned to the trailer “highly intoxicated” after working a shift at a restaurant. The affidavit quotes the man as saying he was in bed when Haskell started hitting him in the body and head with an iPad. After the device broke, she allegedly started stabbing and slashing at him with a 12-inch-long kitchen knife. Villalobos said he noted defense wounds on the boyfriend’s hand and leg.

Police said Haskell was living in Cody, but court records show she previously lived in Gillette. She is currently serving probation in Campbell County District Court for a felony count of causing or attempting to cause bodily injury to a peace officer.

Records show the conviction stems from a June 2022 incident in which she headbutted a Gillette police officer and “displaced” the officer’s nose. She later fought with staff at the Campbell County jail as well, charging documents say. Alcohol was also involved in that incident, the documents say.

Haskell was sentenced to five years of supervised probation for the felony interference in June 2023, with four to six years of prison time suspended.

Court records say she did well until February, when Gillette police responded to a report of “possible domestic violence or mental illness” and found Haskell was “highly intoxicated.”

A Campbell County prosecutor argued that Haskell should be ordered to serve the four to six years of prison time for the violation, saying she posed a danger to herself and the community.

District Judge Mike Causey gave her another chance on probation. The fact that Haskell didn’t lash out at police during February’s incident “speaks volumes about some of the things that you’ve managed to learn,” Causey told her.

Haskell’s probation included requirements to obey the law and stay away from alcohol. As of Friday, Campbell County authorities had not moved to revoke her probation in connection with the recent arrest.

Charging documents don’t say when Haskell moved to Cody, but they indicate she’d been living with her boyfriend for about three weeks before the alleged assault.

A preliminary hearing in the case is tentatively scheduled for Thursday.
