Jodee Metzler, a special education teacher at Powell Middle School, has been receiving some positive attention lately. Most recently she was named Wyoming’s Educator of the Year by the Wyoming American Legion in early August.
This is the continuation of a trend for the local educator. In May 2024 Metzler was named Park County School District 1 Teacher of the Year. She was recognized for her hard work advocating for and teaching students at a surprise assembly in front of students, family and peers.
“She energizes her students and helps students to advocate for themselves, explore ways to be involved with school activities and experience success no matter what obstacle,” Curtis said at the time on her district win. “She works tirelessly with students … every day to ensure that they have access to quality education in their school.”
On the heels of that award, Metzler, a 26-year special ed teacher in Powell, was recognized by the legion at an Aug. 5 meeting after being nominated through Powell’s Hughes-Pittinger Post 26.
In a letter to the post, Powell Middle School Principal Kyle Rohrer said Metzler is a team player with a “can do” attitude in all situations. He also mentioned her ability to work with classroom teachers to meet the needs of her students and her passion for student success.
“Jodee is a class act, a leader and an influencer around Powell Middle School and the community and is very deserving of the award of the American Legion Department of Wyoming Educator of the Year,” Rorher said in his letter.
Metzler’s goal for the school year is, as always, for students to believe in themselves and that they can accomplish what they thought was impossible. In the classroom or in athletics, Metzler wants students to believe in themselves and push to be more than they thought possible.
“I’m very humbled by this award, I’ve now gotten two very prestigious awards, I’ll say, but I think that in order to be a great educator, it takes extreme teamwork, and I have worked in the past and the present with some really great people who have taught me and continue to teach me every day,” Metzler said. “So I would say an award like this is a whole group of people are deserving of this, not just one person, because I didn’t get this award by myself. I got it with the help of a lot of people.”
