Wings ‘N Wheels is celebrating 30 years in style.

The annual car and air show at the Powell Municipal Airport is going to be a two-day event this year, with festivities starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, and resuming at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Organizer Mike Martin is hoping for a big crowd, as the event has already drawn as many as 4,000 people in previous years, and this time around there’s even more to enjoy both on the ground and in the air.

There will be an air show and drag racing both days.

While there will be a variety of planes, Martin said the World War II planes are especially exciting.

“We got lucky. We got a bunch of warbirds coming this year,” Martin said. “And it’s going to be unbelievable.”

That includes a P-51, a Corsair, a T-28, a TBM Avenger, and a Wildcat, “and then whatever else happens to show up.”

Some of the planes are stopping by the Powell airshow ahead of the Billings show the next weekend.

Of course, it’s not all old warbirds and aerobatic biplanes. Martin said it’s likely attendees will get to see an Epic, a brand new airplane with all carbon fiber and a turbo prop.

“It’s a beautiful airplane,” he said.

Along with the sights and sounds of airplanes will be the cars, both those in the drag races and those just for show.

Martin said the plan is to get drag races started right at 7 a.m. Saturday after the Friday night racing.

Drag racing has gained in popularity not just at the event but in general, as there’s now a whole series of summer races, of which this weekend’s event is a part.

Beyond the wings and wheels, there will be food trucks and other vendors on hand, and special for Friday night there will be live music by local band Smoking Aces and alcoholic beverages for sale courtesy of K-Bar.

Martin said the show wouldn’t be possible without its sponsors, including Lamplighter Inn  and First Bank of Wyoming, “who have stood behind me for 30 years” and the support of the City of Powell, which lets the show use city facilities and donates funds to the show.

Cost for the show is $10 and covers both days, while children 12 and under enter free.
