When you see a pretty or interesting rock, you might wonder what type of rock it is. Here’s your chance to figure it out.
Geologist Greg Jones of Cody will give a presentation about rock identification at the March meeting of the Shoshone Rock Club in Powell. The meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Elks Lodge, located at Sixth and Clark streets. Members and visitors are welcome.
Jones will talk about different types of rocks, such as quartz, chalcedony (jaspers and agates), jade, selenite, hematite and many others. He will demonstrate methods anyone can use to help identify them.
Attendees will have an opportunity to order rock identification kits through a vender in Wyoming, which will enable them to start identifying rocks themselves.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 8, at the Elks Lodge. It will be a celebration of the club’s 75th birthday. The Shoshone Rock Club was founded on April 6, 1951.
Planning is underway for the 2026 Bighorn Rock Show, which will take place on Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30, at the Park County Fairgrounds.
In addition, the Shoshone Rock Club will join the Cody 59ers Rock Club for a rock-hunting field trip in May. The hunt will be dedicated to the memory of Linda Jennings of Cody, who died in November. She was a longtime member of both clubs.
